His posts are difficult to read because they are long winded before he gets to making his point. He could quite easily cut a paragraph into a sentence and still make the same point and make it just as effective.
When reading books, the authors that do the same (which is what incresingly frustrated me about the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books) annoy the hell out of me and I want to shout at them
That sort of method I used in essays where I had a minimum word count yet couldn't think of anything else to put.... so I make it a jungle of text!2sides2everystory wrote: »Engaging in debates is one means of attempting to move minds, but MSE is no think tank nor Oxford debating society. I am not submitting them for the purposes of gaining marks out of ten, but if, given some of your views, you find them difficult to deal with then perhaps I am broadly on the right track on the opposite side
Could quite easily be.2sides2everystorytwin wrote:I have my opinions and views which I am allowed to on MSE, as you are. I am not here to get my views judged, just merely to express them.

Lokolo, ONW, Melancholy, what size T-shirts are you?
Thinking of ordering us all one of these each, just for this thread. http://dailymash.shotdeadinthehead.com/product_view.aspx?pid=13660 -
Gawd, now the language experts are putting words in my mouth - or rather taking them out quicker than dentistry students on a ripe cadaver
Wow! Well done Lokolo - your version has removed my potential edginess, my tendency to arrogance, my capacity for self-effacement, my kowtow to Martin, and my sideswipe at melancholly i.e. all the rock and roll / entertainment value :rotfl:
But then again, maybe you ain't nuthin but a hound dog ?
Edit: Et tu, Taiko ?0 -

Yeh but you see my point! It is quite annoying sometimes, but I am getting used to it
I'm not quite sure why you aren't a politician with those sort of skills though!0 -

I also think that what you or I consider as being paid extremely well paid may be different from others on here who expect their offspring to be higher tax payers before the age of 30.melancholly wrote: »apart from those who are in the uni management and not really 'academic staff', the max salary is limited by the pay scales now though, surely? even the very top end of a professor scale wouldn't get into mega bucks (and for that i'll use an arbitrary cut off of into 6 figures - which is your average GP salary these days). granted VCs get far more than they should, but there's only one per uni so that's not so representative!
it's plenty to live off - it's not a 'bad' salary at all. but it isn't huge. the ones who do well financially are the ones with a sideline in popular books and media appearances.... which is always the way to get a good 'academic' reputation
In relation to the average salary, I think over £60k is pretty good going, unless my future salary expectations are woefully low. And yes, he is on the front line of student teaching. But like I said, they are doing a bloody hard job and are effectively doing two at once. I never said they didn't deserve more
Of course once we get into the VCs that's a whole other issue!Lokolo, ONW, Melancholy, what size T-shirts are you?

Oh no, he is a professor. Sorry, I should have said! I know that the more junior staff have it pretty rough, and most are doing well to get a job at all.0 -

that seems fair enough since that's the top end of the career. most people don't make it to professorial level so not many people end up on that salary. i guess it's a bit like being a senior manager in a private company (although that's a bad comparison as often they'd get a lot more!).
still, no-one picks a career in academia for the money (or often the joy of teaching!) - it's never the motivation for choosing the career.:happyhear0 -

It's a good job no one chooses academia for the money! As far as I am aware the payment of lecturers doesn't come out of the tuition fee moneys, but I could be wrong on that, do you have any professional insight?
My original career aim was academia, but couldn't face not having a guarantee of a job upon graduation. The short-term contracts and having to be open to working anywhere in pursuit of those jobs wasn't appealing either.0
