LOL - I meant Ceridwen. Oh the irony...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

My apologies to you for misunderstanding your post. But there is still nothing wrong with me and I am still perfectly sane.
  • Wow, this thread has turned to garbage. It's a shame it wasn't a discussion about the 'average' wage, rather than a rubbish attempt to gather a small sample size of biased data.

There's some good graphage here: http://career-advice.monster.co.uk/salary-benefits/pay-salary-advice/uk-average-salary-graphs/article.aspx

I particullaly like the 'average salary by years experience' graph. Interesting outcomes from that, like 10 years experience can add £10k to your salary. I'm quite surprised that the larger firm (in terms of employees) you're in, the higher the average salary is.

Shame they messed up the last 3.

    Experience is no suprise,
eg technical career in IT : trainee, junior, middle, senior, consultant.

AS for size I suspect, union, collective bargaining and wage structure has a lot to do with it. more difficult to get wages down when you have pay bands.
Smaller companies can replace with cheaper people much easier.

I've always found salary surveys from agencies really helpful. They detail average salaries for trainees, newly qualified professionals, people with 0-3 years post qualification experience, etc, so based on how experienced you are, rather than simply how old you are. They also show the impact of location, type of employer, etc, so very thorough indeed.

If you look for surveys specific to your profession, they're really interesting to read. How much you earn in comparison to the UK national average doesn't really mean a great deal, but if you compare your earnings to that of your peers, it's much more meaningful.

I know many people don't speak well of agencies, but they have their uses. The salary surveys in particular are great!

£46K gets me what I consider a comfortable lifestyle, not a luxurious one. It means I get to go on holidays, but not the far away ones I dream of (or even outside of France or Spain!). It gets me a new car, but not the nice one I'd like (not talking about a flashy car, but not a common one either) and only on a hire lease. It means I own my home and intend to repay the mortgage before I turn 50, but it's 'only' a semi with no garage. It means that I could afford to live in an area with good schools, but not send my kids to the private school I wish they attended.

Yes, it means I don't have to worry about debts, or check how much there is left in my account weekly. It means I don't have to sweat if I need to make an emergency purchase, but it also means that my saving is taking quite some time to become a nice little nest.

What did I have to do to get there: A BA and than an MA with loans I had to repay for years, changing jobs regularly to see my pay increase, commuting much further than I wished, and now being stuck in a stressful job which is starting to affect my health and starting to wonder if it is worth it all...

Proud to be average. Would prefer to live in a country where you are able to support yourself on an average wage. But then what country is that?

    Good post.

No I have never been a member of the MSE forums before, purely making a judgement on this thread alone, nothing else. It just tickled me that few people were able to follow along the lines of the origional poster. :)
