  • TV ads drive me crazy, there are so few that would persuade me to buy. Even the mouthwatering M & S foor ads simply encourage me to cook with more panache! Thank goodness for SKY+, I don't need to watch any ads at all.

There are hoards of TV ads that are over the top and unconvincing (angels falling from the sky for Lynx, really?), but we'd like MoneySavers to tell us which ones actually worked for you and convinced you to buy the product/service.

  • May be a bit late but under final development is a box of tricks called NOMAD.. It basically replaces ads on commercial chanels being viewed with either hard disk derived screen savers, a slide show of family photos from a memory disk or pre recorded items ,when the program returns the box goes back to normal viewing. A small picture in picture shows the ad in case the viewer wants to switch back. The final part being developed is a method of recording a whole evenings viewing automatically without ads for playback later. Eventual price at below £100.00 from non profit making retired engineer. Watch this space as they say...
  • I think ads only work on children (or mainly)
Can't think of anything I've bought because of an ad I saw as an adult.
But I've bought loads of things (as an adult) because I saw an ad when I was young.

Twix ad in the 70s...the longer lasting snack
    Heinz soup
    Ready Brek (glowing child)

I still buy things now because of ads I saw as a child
  • I'm a sucker for the M&S food commercials. Although I don't want insurance I do want a meerkat. Love those commercials.

    Ready Brek (glowing child)

    I remember that one.

We used to get ready brek as children, and I remember the four of us sitting there with our bowls and spoons waiting for the hot milk to be poured in and we would stir like mad so it wouldn't go lumpy! Although like the Colgate ad (halo round the mouth) and the Robinsons ad (instant, magic butler), I was very disappointed that I didn't get the nuclear glow around me after eating ready brek. :rotfl:

I hadn't eaten it for years preferring to make my own porridge from scratch. A couple of years ago the Co-op had an offer on ready brek so I bought a couple of boxes. I didn't realise just how vile the stuff is. I didn't bother finding another use for it, and wrote the money off by bunging them in the bin.
  • I love the ads - best fiction on tv! Like so many here, I mute the sound (no Sky+ in my house) for all but those I admire for their sheer panach and/or downright cheek.

M&S food ads make me hungry, but their latest Xmas X Factor ad makes me feel ill - awful.

Meerkat ads are superb - I logged onto the comparethemeerkat website when the first one appeared and have been hooked ever since. Never used the proper comparison site, but the brand name has stuck like glue.

Favourite childhood ads were the Humphreys drinking straws from the Milk Marketing board - remember them? Watch out there's a Humprey about - great ads, disgusting product! Also the 'secret lemonade drinker' but then R Whites make probably the best lemonade anyway IMHO.

My current absolute favourite for selling something you really, really don't need is the 'never touch a germy handpump again'. It's a soap dispenser for heaven's sake - any germs you get from the pump you promptly wash off with the soap!!! Genius...
  • Crusha milkshake syrup

Confirmed by others at "Crusha Gym Kittens - YouTube"

It contains aspartame, so I was put off at first, but gave in the the pull of the gym cats.

:rotfl:- will you come and wipe the coffee splutters off my keyboard and monitor please?
  • I love the Aldi adds where they compare one brand product with their own.
  • I bought Yeo Valley yogurts because of their recent "boy-band" adverts.
To be fair, the supermarket had run out of own brand, as Yeo Valley isn't my normal choice. However, the ads have made me and my friends laugh, and I like the idea of buying from a company with a clear sense of humour who aren't taking themselves seriously.

The yogurts were really nice, so will buy them again if they're on offer or something :D
