  • I knitted a super long scarf with my enormous needles, it HAD to be long enough to wrap round my teenage daughter's neck twice (apparantly!) She loves it "OMG Mum, that's actually really nice" was her response! Much cheaper than buying one in the shops and made with love too...Thankyou lovely Nora for the inspiration:heart2:

    And when she annoys you it'll go round 3 times...

    Personal presents are the nicer ones and the don't get more personal than that.

  • Wow! That's seriously fab. :T

    How long did it take you? Ooo, and how many balls?
  • Aww, thankyou, not too bad for a first attempt!
    I used 4 strands of cheapy wool from Wilkos (about £1.29 a ball) and knitted a row then purled a row, it took about 3 hours and I used around 2 balls of wool..quite thrifty really :D

  • So.....I've had an unnecessarily spendy few days.....

    I don't know if anyone else in the MSE-verse feels like this, but the internal dialogue goes something like this:

    Mini Nora: I want it.
    Big Nora: I know sweetie, but it's payday on Monday so you can have it then.
    Mini Nora: Want it now *grump*
    Big Nora: Well, you can't have it now - at the moment I don't have the money for unplanned extras two days before payday.
    Big Nora: Come on, we talked about this, don't sulk. Look how far we've come - how proud we are.
    Mini Nora: We worked, and worked, and worked so we'd have the money - s'not my fault you're useless with managing it. IwantIwantIwantIwantIwant...
    Big Nora *sigh*
    Mini Nora: You know it'd make you feel better...and remember, you have all that free space on your credit card limits....and you deserve it...it's been a hard week, hasn't it....
    Big Nora: It really has....
    Mini Nora: And you know how spending makes you feel better, doesn't it?
    Big Nora: Well, yes, it used to.
    Mini Nora: It will do again - go on, no reason you can't put it on a card...

    There is a bright side to all of this - previously I would have spent hundreds, gone over the overdraft and maxed the credit card. I have been known to be on the tip of my overdraft limit, and still take out £300....

    Yesterday I spent:
    £10 on the alternative WI charity calendar when I went to see Calendar Girls at the theatre (can't recommend it highly enough);
    £7.89 on a round of drinks at the theatre (someone else drove, so no other layout);
    £1.50 on chippity chips (which I really did want this time);
    £4.18 on walnuts and demerrera sugar - made banana bread out of over-ripe bananas.

    Now, I know none of it was good - but I'm pretty darn chuffed that it was all in cash; that Mini Nora couldn't persuade me to go over any of my limits; and the credit card stayed right where it lives in the vase. The drop from spending several hundred on absolutely nothing, to less than £30 is quite remarkable!

    Of course, you know I'm now challenging myself to either have a little stash of cash ring-fenced for the end of the month, or to reduce that £30 to nothing....oooo, or maybe both!!

    If you keep spanking Mini Nora, eventually she'll get the hint.

    Don't reduce the £30 to nothing. Have a little bit in your budget as "you" money for you to spend on you. Otherwise you will eventually rebel, and go on a splurge.

    Brilliant!

    I think you spent very little at the cinema....and the calander will be a lovely reminder of your evening out. :)

    Hope the banana cake is gorgeous.
