*snigger* I'll be on the lookout... though how he'll be able to tell me from all the other white vans on that road!!

It would be rather difficult. Of the few times I've been on that road, there was always a tightly-packed day's programme demonstrating numerous examples of "quality" driving...

Never under-estimate the power of a woman and her white van.

All it means is that the skid marks will run out not far from you...

I'm lucky. Did I ever tell you that? Insanely lucky, in fact.

Admittedly, my luck doesn't cover such things as knowing the right lotto numbers etc., but all in there's generally an aroma of roses. Mainly my luck manifests in having an immediate family which doesn't suck (even if the extended part does), and the most amazing group of wonderful friends.

So I'm feeling a little out of sorts this evening as I've had to begin that difficult conversation with a dear friend which consists largely of the 'what you want for me isn't what I want for me, and you need to back off...' message.

Now I ask you, how do you go about saying that to someone who loves you, and has your best interests at heart - but feels so strongly that their way is the only right way?

I'm more out of sorts because it's the same conversation I'm having to have with family and other friends - all who've known me since forever, and 'want what's best' for me...

It's highlighted the difference between those who've known me since my youthful daft days, and my newer friends who've only known me as a capable adult. Those who know me now are fully supportive of my wish to steer clear of going back down the career path I trekked along before - they trust that so long as I can pay my bills, and am happy, then they don't need to do any more than be supportive.

While those who have known me from childhood see me as needing direction - as though somehow, my lifestyle is childlike and needs taking in hand...

I had a deep and meaningful (blame the tea) with a newer friend earlier today, where we spoke about the difference in personal aspirations - and how easy it is to judge someone else's aspirations as meaningless, or somehow less than you think they should be simply because they are different from your own. I know I've judged others like this in the past, and today it's a little like karma biting me on the arsicle to have it done to me....

Thankfully, because I really am blessed with wonderful friends, I know that this will be sorted out easily enough - at least so that it doesn't come between us. But it's served as an interesting reminder that I've moved on considerably from the girl they first knew - and that I'm finally (at 37) learning not only to stand on my own two feet, but to walk a different path than is generally expected of me.

One step at a time though, eh? ;)

Hell if what you do makes you happy and means you can live on your own two feet (or in my case more often than not my hands and knees as the vodka made my high heels wobble....) then I'm with the new friends.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

    Hello Nora,

Isn't it lovely to feel that absolute luck with people close to you?

I hope your friend can start seeing the real adult you very quickly. Within that talk, maybe you can own the stuff of the past and then ask "but when was the last time you saw me act like that/make that kind of mistake/do that?" Then pause while they go through the process of thinking about you and how you act. You almost need to help create the new memories of you for them as their thoughts about you are based on that long inset impression from years back.

Good luck anyway. I hope it works out as you want it to. x

Lovely post Nora - and Scuba, you made me giggle.

I kinda think I know what you mean. I suspect if I am brave enough to try for what I really want now, instead of trudging on with the idea that eventually I'll earn enough to do what I really want er, sometime, there are going to be some surprised faces. But have decided life is too short for any more trudging.

Here's to steps in the right direction
