Knitting_Nora wrote: »Hi all.
Over the last couple of days I've been thinking a lot about the value of material things.
Stick with me here - this isn't going to wander too far into the 'give it all up and ye shall inherit the love of a ferret' realm without at least stopping for a chocolate break....
Is this the Chocolate Ferret Cult?Knitting_Nora wrote: »At the beginning of the month I ebayed a bright pink wool coat. It was gorgeous, and I loved it. I'd bought it on impulse from M&S on a day where, following a week in a cramped and sweaty hotel room, I was feeling less than fabulous and a little homesick for Chez Nora.
Truth be told, like many of my impulse purchases, I bought it because I wanted to be the sort of woman who wore such things
What attributes of the sort of women who wear such things did you find the most appealing?Knitting_Nora wrote: »- seduced by that moment in the store where you believe that a mere coat will turn you into someone who actually liberates her make-up from it's bag, or who not only washes and brushes her hair, but actively dries and styles it. I wore it once, and felt so out of place I never wore it again.
What did you feel that turned you off from being a woman who wears such things?Knitting_Nora wrote: »Right, I'm back...accompanied by mint aero (though not for long...mwahahaha).
That took a long time to hunt down. Maybe you should take a shotgun next time...Knitting_Nora wrote: »So I've been musing on material things, and how we MSE-ers, once committed, begin to reprioritise what's important - and I'm just a bit chuffed with myself, and with everyone else along for the journey too.
I think it is also the realisation of, and focussing on, what helps you become what you want to be, and what doesn't and is irrelevant. For example, you could give me whatever needles you wanted, and I would never be a knitter - but equally, you would never be a knitter without them.Knitting_Nora wrote: »Having lurked around some of the other forums, I've even been reminded that somewhere at the back of the bathroom cupboard, I have half a dozen face masks, and a veritable salon's worth of nail varnish...about time Chez Nora installed a salon methinks!

It also sounds (along with the scrapping of the beauty treatments) that you're becoming a little happier with yourself. Is that right?"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Hey Z
I think you're right - it's about being a bit happier with myself, and understanding that it's down to behaviouors rather than owning lots of stuff.
And, of course, let's not underestimate the power of knowing where to find the documented interest rate on your bank account's overdraft!;)
By the way, the coat was a very 1930s/40s inspired style - an era I love (especially as a curvy lady), and have decided to gently edge my style towards...
Hmm...that suggests I have style now...:rotfl:
Anyway, I wasn't ready at the time, which is why I only wore it once (it got a little too much attention - silly I know)....but we'll see what the future holds.
And that mint aero was a git to hunt down... chased it round the kitchen several times before it gave in and came quietly!

Not silly at all. But it does imply you want *some* attention, so maybe you'll be looking for something that makes a statement, but is less showy?Knitting_Nora wrote: »but we'll see what the future holds.
What do you want it to hold?Knitting_Nora wrote: »And that mint aero was a git to hunt down... chased it round the kitchen several times before it gave in and came quietly!
Shotgun. Adds even more holes as a bonus..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Good morning, and wow on yesterday's epiphany re materialism! Totally love the knitting. I saw some big pins on ebay...I have serious big pin envy! xPay off as much as you can in 2012 challenge No. 64: 328.75/2,5000

Materialism! That was the word! Thanks Dot (and good morning right back atcha).
I was all busy epiphanising (is too a word) yesterday, and I couldn't think of the proper term! :rotfl:0 -
Normal service today - I can already tell my brain is switched to shallow thoughts only, as it's diverted it's attention to the battle strategy required for putting together and securing the box for music magpie....never underestimate the evil genius of the file box when in close proximity to parcel tape!
What else does the day hold...well find a comfortable seat, and I shall tell you dear reader.....
Today is a magical day, which falls only once in a blue moon...it is none other than bureaucracy day!!! *ahhhhhh-ahhhhhh* (that's clearly cherubs singing - why would you questions this??)
That's right - pipe in the music, set phasers to stun, Nora's about to dive into the filing and paperwork pile!
All papers have been gathered from around the house, files and the hole punch are waiting...there's even one for specific debt busting where the snowball printout will go.....the listing pad and pen are quivering in excitement....the envelopes look scared, and the stamps are planning an escape...
*salutes* my thoughts are with you MSE-verse - til we meet again!

Hi Knitty,
I am sorry I have been a bad bad virtual motivator these past couple of days, you can rap my knuckles......but not with those mega things you call needles (I have to wonder what is holding your telephone/electicity lines up!!!!!)
I have the ebay bug at the moment too. I have a nice little pot growing and have been earmarking some things that I can buy as Christmas prezzies from ebay. That way I avoid transferring money from paypal to my bank and if it's not coming out of the bank then I'm not spending it and if I'm not spending it.......it's free!!!!! Well......that's what I've told myself anyway
Have a good day with your stationery!!! I love pens and pads and organisers and files and folders. I can spend hours at work browsing through a stationery catalogue.............well I suppose it could be much much worse!!!!! :rotfl:

It was going to be a NSD and sit at home with crochet but Dr Dragon forgot to take the parcel this morning and as it needs sending and as I can't walk far (will make it to the post office then need a decent rest - the pub is two doors down ..... urm shame!), you are more than welcome to come along (could be nice to have company
)
