only one dog has ever bitten me - that was a dachshund whose owner never bothered to train the dam thing! bad tempered, and bad mannered, the dam dog just walked over to me and bit my hand out of sheer spite! me and mum were 'having tea' with this dogs owner at the time and I was sitting nicely and being a good girl - I was all of five years old! I bled, mum had the screaming adbads and the old lady banished us both for 'upsetting' her little Heidi!
made a lasting impression on me - I hated irresponsible owners from then on! even at that age I realised that the dog was a 'spoiled brat' and was jealous because its owner was paying attention to me!
I dont dislike dachshunds - I've met some nice ones. I've met spoilt westies, JRs, KCCs, (mostly small dogs I must say) but, its the OWNERS at fault!
I've also met Rotties who were so soppy and nearly killed me with affection, dobermans who impressed me with their aloofness but were sooooooooo dignified, GSDs who were affectionate when they got to know you - but always so protective of the owner.
Its the upbringing of the dog that counts.
My own staffie was a sweetie - she just didnt want other dogs near HER humans! or other humans near her KIDS! and MY kids were HER kids!
My OH was apparently big enough and hard enough to look after himself! he found it amusing that she allowed all and sundry to approach him while she looked bored..........yet if me or the kids were around .........she immediately went into bodyguard mode!
OP - dont say the Staffy word - call your dog an SBT!

I'm sorry you were bitten and you're right that it was all the owner's fault, but dogs don't understand concepts like 'spite' and 'jealousy'. This kind of projection of human emotions onto dogs is all part of why there are sometimes issues. They relate to each other and to us in a completely different way.

That poor dog had probably been treated like a stuffed toy and had no socialisation, making it fearful and overreactive.

I really think the best thing any puppy owner can do for their pup is to socialise it properly, sets them up for life more than anything else.

No excuse for kicking a Yorkie.
  • Welcome to the world of staffie ownership. They are very loyal dogs and will really test you over the years, but they do love to learn and its a pleasure to teach them as all they want to do is please you. Instill the fact you're the master early on as they can end up running the household.

I speak as an owner of a 13 year old (almost) red staffie boy called Zack and I wouldn't have any other breed. He's excellent with kids, other dogs and pets (rabbit, tortoise and even hamsters!). We have a !!!!!, another male and a pit bull also in the family and all play nicely as they have been socialised from day one. As mine is the oldest, he's the boss in dog world.

I'd love another one or two in the future, but as mine is so old we're making the most of the time we have left with him as he's riddled with arthritis and we recently bought him some wheels for long walks.

Have lots of fun with your pup. I wish I had all that to go through again with mine as its so much fun :)

The general conciousness is owners of staffies dont give a stuff if their dog attacks another dog , because they know the staffy/ pitbull cross will win, thats why most have them.
My dog has been attacked by a "staffy" the lout thought it was very funny at first, unfortunately his dog was a lot better at fighting than him.

Hmm, there are a lot of staffy owners on this thread who don't fit your stereotype.

you should meet my girl then! if I'm giving my lad too much attention she gets a proper huff on and pushes him out of the way, and if i pick him up she's growling at him.

there is i pay to fix my dogs, not that unemplyed t!t. i also had my two children with me, what if they had next decided to bite one of them, i guess you would of magically made another set of hands appear, to nicely lift the yorkies out of the way but i didnt have that option

It might look a lot like jealousy, but its not. ;)

She's resource guarding you, you are the provider of food, affection and all that is good, she must preserve her status with you to keep getting these things.
