It's always 'Kid gets mauled by devil dog' followed by the same picture of a snarling staffy... that dog must be more famous than Lassie the amount of times it's appeared in stories.
"Kid gets mauled by pet poodle" doesn't make interesting reading as they can only follow it up with a paragraph on them having stupid hair cuts and being bred to labradors to be hypo allergenic.
Its not just that, it is a sad fact that far too many idiots have staffies and are either not training them at all or training them to be aggressive. Its not the dogs' fault, its the human, but it doesn't help to pretend it isn't happening.0 -
I have 2 small children and we have a staffy. ...The kids jump all over him ride on him
Why on earth are,s your kids trained to respect the dog? Why are you allowing your kids to do THAT to poor dog?It is all down to the way the dogs are treated in the first place.
Exactly - do you feel YOURS is treated well?0 -
It is down to the individual personality of the dog and the way the owners has brought it up.
When my dog was 3 months old, she was attacked by staffie. Almost killed her. This dog is still around and lives near a school. This is my only bad experience of staffies.
Most of experience have been excellent. My dog (now 4 years old) is friends with staffie and they love to play together whenever they see each other when out for a walk. My aunt has 4 kids and had 2 staffies (R.I.P.). These two dogs were the most softest, loveable things you could ever ask for.0 -
TBH I do avoid staffies when walking Zara - she too was attacked by those 3 times when she was a pup, she does not like them, neither do I.
Neighbour upstairs has a staffie. absolutely adorable girl, I have known the dog for 3 years, take her out ocassionally but the JAW on that gives me creeps.
Zara does not like the way they run towards her - they may be wanting to play BUT they run at fullspeed and jump and she does not like that at all.
Saying that - when Zara plays with another GR like herself - anyone looking from the side would think we are having a dog fight as this is how GS play - teeth out, tumble all over the place, growling, saliva on one another but no skin broken no bites - they just play like that.
I guess each breed has their way of playing - I do not believe GS and staffs mix well, seen it too may times.
OP - I am really sorry you come across so much hostility, your pup may be the best in the world for you and at the end of the day this is what matters.
I have people crossing the road when they see Zara, good they do - she would lick them to death given a chance but as staffs, GS are seen as dangerous dogs and hey.... whatever - love my dog and I am sure you love yours. I do not expect everyone go Ohhhhhh around Zara as I understand some people are scared of GS or simply dont like them - I am afraid you need to develop thick skin as someone already said.... and just love your dog0 -

There is good and bad in every single breed in my lifetime growing up we had 3 GSD and now I have my one and not once have I ever been bitten, neither have i been bitten by Rotties, Dobermans,Staffs etc but I have been bitten by a king charles spaniel!
Honestly, the upset will where off, as long as you are happy and your pup is happy that is all that matters.
All the best to you hun

Like others have said you just end up developing a thick skin...nowt else you can do. I used to take my sisters staffy out for a walk and also experienced the same as you, I used to be a bad boy though as when I would see people cower or cross over...or completely over react in some way I would just shout "Come on killer lets get off".....her name is actually shay and she is the sweetest most obedient little thing ......But there is no telling some people. Don't even bother trying.0 -
I love my Staffy lad more than I like people!
I get very cross when I take him out for a walk and a GR regularly jumps and bites him all over. He even humped my boy the other day - my poor hound looked horrified! The owner just stands there and weakly repeats the GR's name which is totally ignored. So my lad comes home covered with little wounds from this ruddy GR and yet if he were to snap one day and fight back, the GR owner would probably blame me!
OP - enjoy your fur baby x0 -
what is GR?0

Golden Retriever? Look like angels, but can be positively monstrous in character (MIL's dogs being an example of this). Being associated with the middle classes helps the illusion along, too.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
