My sister has two staffies, took them to training classes, did everything right with them, four years ago one of her staffies walked up to my sheltie and with one bite killed her. I do not and never will ever again trust a staffie near one of my dogs, if I'm on my own I will fuss them but near my dogs never. We found out later on that other pups in the litter went on to attack and they were all very unpredictable, but I do get piddled of with people always saying it's the owners fault, they must have brought the dog up wrong, it's not always the owners fault you do get bad dogs because of bad breeding.

    how do you know?

Because if they did, just once, ever, someone would have posted the link for all to see.

Seriously, I just wish people would stop pretending that 100% of these dogs are safe with kids. When I'm walking along with my little ones and I see someone with a SBT, how the h*ll am I supposed to know if they're a responsible owner or not? That's why people like me avoid people with these awful dogs, because in the wrong hands they are very dangerous and I am absolutely not prepared to take the risk.

It's not people like me you should be getting angry at, it's the irresponsible and utter idiots who have angry dogs because of the way the dogs were raised.

I have 2 small children and we have a staffy. The most caring and dosile pet there is. The kids jump all over him ride on him and he just does not care and I would trust him 100%. It is all down to the way the dogs are treated in the first place.
Would you accept a one in a million chance that cuddles might turn ?
Do you play the lottery ?
So next time you're praying you win the lottery you better pray you're staffy doesnt attack your child, after all it will be much more likely.

Sorry but there is no way I would ever allow a child to do that to any dog, I've got a sheltie and a Bichon and three grandbrats, the rule in this house is that the dogs are allowed to approach the kids there is no way the brats are allowed to approach the dogs. My sheltie Arran will play with the kids and that's fine but as soon as the kids start to get too excited then all play is stopped, Ellie my Bichon is a rescue from Many tears, she's wary of the kids so they are not allowed to go any where near her.

It was rotties when I was younger, GSDs before that, the doberman had it's time in the press too, remember? Then pit bulls and look what happened to them. Now staffies. Look at the owner, not the breed.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

I've got ADHD. You can ask me about it but I may not remember to answer...

Have to say im not a staffie fan, my own dog was badly bitten by one, and just a couple of weeks ago my neighbours jack russell, which was on the lead was killed by one off its lead in the street outside. In saying that though, staffies are usually very very good with people and kids, its other animals they tend to have a problem with more often in my experiance but the same can be said for greyhounds and other breeds of dogs.

Generally speaking i think the bad press they get is often down to the owners they have, and the dog has been taught no better (although i also think sometimes you just get 'bad' dogs of any breed, who were born that way, just like you do people.) which you cant blame the dog for.

PS i was bitten (only slightly) by a poodle as a child and i dont like those particulary either!
  • I have had 2 rottys, 1 staff and 1 staff x labrador (all at the same time). Due to health problems we only have the staffy and staff x labrador left. I have a 5 month baby and the are wonderful with him.
Small minded people think dogs are born bad, nothing of the sort. Good owners raise them as part of their family and to be proud of them. When out walking out of respect for other dog owners you put yours on the lead and expect them to do the same, so many people wanted to fuss them, all of us together could be quite daunting but you can always strike up a friendly conversation with someone about your dog/s.
Bring your pup up well, love him, train him and be proud.
Never let anyone put you or your dog down, they're closed minded people who have nothing better to do than moan.

ever fancied telling the truth and not something you read somewhere else?

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=lock+jaw+myth&meta=&safe=active

Or perhaps you could have tried reading what i posted first?
Perhaps i should have said that they have very strong jaws, rather than locking them, but everything i've said is first hand experience, not something i've read online.
Trying to prise a staffy off the arm of a grown adult who is slowly bleeding out is not much fun and not easy. No chance of merely pulling the jaws apart.
Admittedly, staffs and pitbull types are the only dogs i've ever had calls to that have attacked, so can't comment on other breeds.

I love all dogs but have to say every single time my dogs have been attacked, it's been a staffie that's done the attacking. And they have such a strong bite so it's hard to protect your dog.

There's a family near me that has two male staffies and they are solid muscle, taught by their dumbo owners to be aggressive and praised when they go for another dog. Of course it's not their fault, but I still don't want them anywhere near my dogs!

The reason you see so many reports about them killing children is that it's more exciting to stick with one dog. You never hear about poodles or border collies killing kids because they don't have bad press

strangely enough, you replied to my post where i said 'you never hear about it because they don't have bad press'. Which kind of defeats the object of your comment about a link.

who's saying 100% of these dogs are safe with kids? did one bite your eyes and affect your reading? so far you've just replied to comments that don't exist.

that would have been better as the ability to lock their jaws is wrong, it just keeps the myth rolling.
