espresso, yeah i can see that, honestly!
what i think im asking now (and yeah i understand that ive changed questions a few times now)is what TT do at the exchange that allows them to offer up 24mb speeds?
Put simply, they use a different technology (later development) to provide internet access to your home.
If you post your router stats. see here, that can give a fairly accurate indication of what speed you can expect on the different technologies used but I would not touch TalkTalk myself! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
no ive heard horror stories myself.... just having moved from an area where i had ntl/virgin broadband a couple of years back 6 meg isnt that great... ill drop the router stats later.
exchange is Emmelbo0 -

Im assuming they will use the same equipment from the exchange to my house, as no one... has yet (deklan aside) told me why it would be any different.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/telephone_exchange.htm gives more detail. In effect when LLU providers installed their own equipment it was already capable of "upto" 24 meg. Old BT equipment provided adsl max, "upto" 8 meg. BT now upgrading to newer MSANs, similar to those installed by the LLU operators.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
hi JC Derby,
Form the details you posted regarding the exchange BT are only offering ADSL Max at present. This is limited to 8mbps max speeds.
TalkTalk Have our own LLU equipment in your exchange that can sync upto 24mbps. This is the reason for the differnce.
The copper line from your property to the exchange will still be the same adn when considering speeds this also has to be factored in. If you use the availability checker on the TalkTalk Website this will give you an "Expected Speed" result based on line tests. This will give you an idea of what speeds to expect with TT. As you correctly stated the 24mbps is an Upto, the availability checker will give you an indication of what is is expected to be wihtin this "upto" range

Really? It runs a test? Or do you really mean "it gives an estimated speed based on the BT database"? Which of course can be wildly inaccurate in some cases.
To be fair - pretty much ALL ISPs use the BT database to provide speed estimates. I am only picking you up on the inference (deliberate or not) from your post that you don't use the BT database, and you have already run your own tests or run one dynamically when someone uses the checker.

Hi Bod,
I made no insinuations that the tests were conducted by ourselves. I will need to confirm more details on where the raw data for the estimated speeds is obtained. Im aware that these are related to line checks but make no aspersions below as to if the lines are checked by TT or from data obtained from Wholesale testing by Open Reach.
I am aware the the projected speed we quote is actually less than we expect in order to manage customers expectations (i.e if we estimate a speed of 10mb when the line might handle upto 12mb then customers will receive more than expected). I will look to obtain further details on where the projected speeds data is obtained from.

I'm 99.9% sure that the data comes from the BT database. But you're right, TT do qualify the estimate to cater for sub-optimal lines and so to not give the potential customer an unreasonable expectation.

PS - aspertions?

Hi Bod,
I dont dispute that it might. However, irrespective of where the data comes from it is due to testing that has been conducted on the line regarding attentuation figures etc. This allows a projected speed to be estimated, when TalkTalk display this result on the avilability checker we reduce the value slightly from the figure we expect so as not to overreach expectations.
I will however look into where the raw data is obtained from. Cheers for picking up the typo ive edited this below.

I think it was the wrong word, not a wrong spelling? I think you meant Assertion.

Hi Bod,
By Aspersion I Mean:
a false or misleading charge meant to harm someone's reputation.
If i were to make assumptions that WE are conducting the tests this would be an aspersion (as it may turn out to be false). In either case depending on the intended definition I beleive both would be acceptable
