ok Froggitt how then can talk talk offer upto 24mb...
If they are using the same equipment surely they could only offer upto 8mb?
it all comes from the same exchange through the same bit of wire right?
i know they arent offering 24mb (thats why i put upto values after).

Thanks for the replies guys. What i was after was how can BT only offer upto 8mb and yet Talk talk can offer upto 24mb.
i understand that both are only 'upto' offers as ive said im with BT currently and get 6.5mb which is ok.

i do understand about attenuation, what im after is how are Talktalk supposed to be able to offer 24mb and bt only 8mb (upto values)

ADSL Max only enabled exchange BT Wholesale provide "upto" 8 meg.
21CN WBC/ADSL2+ enabled exchange "upto" 24/20/16 meg depending on resellers honesty.
LLU enabled operators again "upto" 24/20/16 meg irrespective of BT status.

Basically LLU equipment will give "upto" 24 meg, BT Wholesale give "upto" 8 on old ADSL Max only or 24 if exchange upgraded to 21CN WBC/ADSL2+

Why are you assuming that a different ISP will use the same equipment as BT?

BT have upto 20Mb broadband in many exchanges and are upgrading the ones that are 'only' upto 8Mb, there is no real difference between TT's upto 24Mb and BT's upto 20Mb...its possible that in your exchange TT have the option of offering you this (ADSL2) and BT dont, or it could be that BT could upgrade you, but havent done so yet.....if you get 6.5Mb on an upto 8Mb service then you could see a reasonble increase by migrating to ADSL2 whoever offers it......TT and other companys can resell BT, or offer service on their own LLU equipment if they have installed it in your local exchange , but TT can pick and chose with exchanges to to this in

    is that what you mean?

Im assuming they will use the same equipment from the exchange to my house, as no one... has yet (deklan aside) told me why it would be any different.

Not really but even you should be able to see that BT is offering ADSL max and TalkTalk are offering their own LLU equipment in your exchange.

If you don't understand the information provided on Samkknows, posting a link to your exchange would be more helpful. e.g. here

Do you suspect TT are using the generic upto 24Mb claim because they offer it in some places but think in your exchange they could only offer upto 8Mb same as BT ?...I suppose you could use the speed estimate on their website, but use your postcode instead of your tele number otherwise you will get a call from them...if they estimate higher than 8Mb then you would think they can offer ADSL2 regardless of what 'sam knows'
