  • Learning them by rote is the best way, thete doesnt seem to be the same emphasis on it now as when I was a child. We do them differently up here, to down there, maybe our way would be easier for her to grasp? We say eg 1x1 is 1, 1x2 is 2, 1x3 is 3 etc. whereas I believe you lot sa 1x1is 2, 2x1 is 2, 3x1 is 3 and so on. I dont know, but its worth a try, maybe? Ds2is nine, and we just do lots of repetition, and do stuff like, say all the sations quickly, and time hime, do it backwards, throw questions at him, make it fun really, we usually end up in fits of laughter. He aslo has itup in his room, and I make him do star jumps and say whichever one we are working on before he is allowed a bedtime story. Making it funis definitely the key. He loves trying to beat me at reciting it, and trying to beat his previous time. Still cant get 7x8 for some reason, though!

Just a quick call in with my day. DD3 came down to her new work place on the train to make sure she can get there on time and as I live nearer than she does (by about an hour!!!) she came to see me and we spent a lovely day together. If the job goes well she may consider moving a little nearer which would be great, but as I see her most weeks I probably wouldnt see her much more. Anyway so proud of her as she graduated this summer and as she says this is her dream job, she is sooo lucky as many havent managed to get jobs yet.

Sorry cant help with kiddy reading etc, but a lot of pressure seems to be put on kids and parents these days to keep up, I know my DGD has been having homework since she started school reading as well as maths and it is a struggle to keep up with it all sometimes, and shes only 7!

Donny-gal, my dad taught me my times tables by making me say one sum every step I climbed to bed - My bedroom was on the third floor of a house that almost bankrupted my parents as there was so much wrong with it.

I'm still not keen on my 8 and 9 times tables!! Perhaps I'd got to bed by then!!

Donny-gal I used to teach my two by playing card games and my late ma-in-law swore by Domino's It's suprising how quick children are to pick things up when there is a game involved .my youngest DGS is a sweetie but he just isn't keen on school, especially maths and English so we play lots of card games rummy, switch, etc and he loves them.when it comes to spelling i ask random spelling questions and then what does the word mean.He is a bit of a puzzle as his reading age is far in advance of his actual age and his teacher says he is just a bit lazy but if it doesn't grab his interest he just 'switches off' He has a good vocabulary for a seven year old and although year 3 is the youngest in his class. No doubt he will find his level when he wants to.

    Evening all!

Poor OH is in bed sniffling, bless him.

Had a £1 voucher for innocent food pots so went to sainsbobs to get them as they are Bogof atm and there were loads in the reduced section for £1 each! So have saved my voucher for when they are full price again. Got 2 and they were still bogof so pleased with that. Healthy lunches for the next couple of days, going to make my own next week!

I'm tired now, just waiting for my nails to dry then i am heading to bed. Pup is being naughty and ripping open a toy, I've told him off and he's then the toy to bed with him, so will have that to clean up tomorrow!!

    Night night all

    Evening everyone

A late one from me. Thanks for the hugs, feeling a bit better today have spoken to work and I may be able to reduce my hours. Ds2 1st night of no melatonin and he is still wide awake. Wee need to be up at 6.30. If this is the first night, its really not looking good.

Os today loaded dw and emptied wm. Dh made dinner as ds2 had a football match which meant an 90 minute round trip as taxi only collects at school time.

Uolypool- hope the lads mum manages to escape the bully of a husband. Its good that your sons friend knew he could come to you.

    Bitsy ((hugs))

Well I am hoping that ds2 will go to sleep b4 midnight. Hugs to anyone that needs/wants one. Take care.

That is how I learnt my nine times. Just to say though I was found to suffer from dyscalculia - and it made my life an absolute living nightmare until it was recognised. We do have dyslexia in our family so I do think it is a similar problem for me.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
