In my house, it's not the dog hair I'm bothered about - my housemate brother and his girlfriend are ten times messier than the dogs! Fortunately we're in the process of buying our own place, though I'm dreading the thought of the white GSD with the blue carpet currently in the new house's living room, yikes. I can see us buying laminate flooring pretty sharpish!

with that £3m you could buy a bigger house with tiled floors, a cleaner to clean for you and a car just for transporting him

I have a big enough house and we do have a cleaner

Our cat is grey, the only place I notice her hair is on our white bed linen :(

I'd not swop her for the world though.

giving her a good comb every few days helps keep on top of it - I don't do it to keep the house clean, just because she's not much of a washer and so I help to groom her, lol!

I have a large long haired dog (luckily he is a breed who does not moult) and 3 cats. Although my dog does not moult he picks up everything on his coat and brings it in - leaves, bits of grass, twigs, those awful sticky bud things. When I get him back from his walks I brush him and get everything out but as soon as he goes in the garden and he loves spending time in the garden he brings loads of bits in!

I have carpet in the living room because my dog slips on laminate flooring. I hoover at least once every day, often twice especially if someone is coming. My stairs go off my living room so they too seem to always be covered in bits!

My cats have beds on the landing but they often lay on the carpet so that has a layer of cat hair almost permanently even though, again, I hoover it at least once a day.

I also have a big problem with dust. I dust about every other day (should probably do it daily but I hate dusting). If my dog gets muddy, which he does a lot, then it dries in his fur and comes off on the carpet and also floats in the air as dust and lands on everything.

None of the animals are allowed in our bedroom and the dog does not go in the kitchen. Would like to keep the cats out but as there is no door on it that is just impossible.

I do get stressed about the state of the house and it winds me up that although I hoover every day it only looks like I do just after doing it! The rest of the time it looks as though I have not hoovered for about a month!

When I get down about it though I stop and think about how much I love my pets. It is probably impossible to have a perfectly clean and tidy home with animals. I would rather a messy house and pets than a clean and tidy house with no pets - that to me is not a home.

When I had two cats the ginger one would sleep on our navy blue bedding and the black and white old girl would always make a beeline for our beige sofas - if it had been the other way around the hairs would have blended in!

Now we only have our ginger girl - her hair is fine and seems to float everywhere and stick to everything. I now use fleece blankets from Primark and cover all sofas, chairs and beds with them to catch and hold the fur.

I am a mucky, messy pup myself and am a great believer in the fact that it is my own muck and so won't do me any harm...... the only thing I keep absolutely clean are the loos and the worktops in the kitchen - I have managed to train every one of my animals over the years to stay off of them.

I only clean and tidy up when:

    a) someone important is due to visit; or
    b) the fluff floating on the wooden floors is big enough to stub your toe on.

I'm not proud of it but hey, ho...

When my black dog moults you can see his outline when he gets up from a snooze on the (beige!!) carpet...it's like one of those chalk marks they draw around murder victims in old movies!

I would have laminate but my dogs hate it when we visit my daughter - their paws can't get a grip.

I've got laminate in my bedroom and one of mine has started getting up to wander round at about 3am. The scratching on the floor followed by the tippy tap tap on the floor wakes me up without fail.

I hate carpets but am in rented so not much choice. Wonder if LL would replace them. The carpet has been down for at least 8 yrs....is it worth me asking?

When my daughter minded my dogs recently they drove her mad with that, tapping their claws on the floor middle of the night. Every half hour they had a trial wander round to see if their carpets were back yet! She has wooden stairs too and when they did their mad half hour thing they invariably fell down a few steps and yelped in terror each time.

She reckons they were worse than babies!
