    Good luck for tomorrow shegar.
Our house looks lovely and Christmassy now. We had the family over for DS's birthday party today and we're taking him shopping tomorrow for his birthday gifts. He fell asleep while we were doing the tree and watching Michael Buble. DH carried him up to bed and he opened his eyes and said "I don't think I can go to Bath tomorrow Mum, I feel sick"
I hope he's not sick. He missed his 5th birthday because he was ill with flu. Poor mite.

Will be popping into here more often as after 18 months of work, I am to lose my job as the company has lost its contract.:( Sad cos it was ideal hours and location for commuting, childcare and flexibilty. Am very fortunate we don't need my wages to cover bills and mortgage but it makes the 'big ticket' items more difficult, eg hols, white goods, re-decorating etc

On the plus side, I am looking forward to having time to spend sorting out some jobs in the house which have been on hold forever, being able to spend more time with my elderly nan, taking 8yo to and from school and spending more time cooking from scratch.

Have only read the last couple of posts but re not sleeping -my SIL has problems and couple of years ago I made her a 'sleep' hamper. Lavendar toileties, a bedtime drink (think it was herbal tea-bags) and Paul mcKennas book. She loved it.
Well this was the post I made on here a few weeks back. I've dipped in and out of these threads over the past few years- first as a hypothetical 'what would I do if things got tougher' then more of a reality as prices went up, I couldn't find work when youngest went to school, hubby took a pay-cut then things got better, hubby got his pay cut back a year later and then an annual rise the year after that and I found work 18 months ago and then the situation I posted about above. Last week I lost my job though I've been paid till end of month. We also found out that an old endowment we still pay into for a property we no longer own would be paying out for hubby having had cancer a few years back (aka critical life cover). Today I have banked the cheque for over (this is not a typo)£38,000 :j plus another for over £2.5k a refund of payments we have made since his diagnosis.

It takes the pressure off me, finding something else quickly. I am looking forward to being debt free - we can't decide whether we want to make the cc payments online on NYE or NYD :o and I am looking forward to a couple of months at home, learning to live off DH's salary instead of going overdrawn. It isn't enough money to pay off our current mortgage, so we are going to save it and have a think about what to do with it. I am also glad I'm going to be at home as my elderly nan is a bit 'bizarre' for want of another word at the minute so I think I may be needed to be on-hand in the coming weeks.

    Evening everyone :)

shegar I hope today went well :)

Spendless That is fantastic news. I'm sorry it took something so serious for you to get the money and I hope your DH is 100% better now, but it must be such a relief. I won £1000 recently and the joy of that was amazing, so 4.5K must be incredible. Congratulations :)

Today has been another day in the baking marathon that is Christmas. At the moment I'm baking shortbread. The vanilla batch is cooling and the pistachio and cranberry batch is in the oven. I'm hoping some of it makes it to the morning as it is my favourite and I'm able to consume vast amounts of it. I brought two of the Sainsburys Christmas cake kits yesterday as they are reduced down to £2 and baked one of them today into two rectangular cakes. I will top ice these in marzipan and fondant later in the week and give them to neighbours as presents.
Tomorrow is Knit and Natter so some of the shortbread and the parkin I made last week will be going to that. Then tomorrow afternoon is for making sea salted caramel fudge, tablet and chocolate truffles. No wonder I'm still feeling a little bah humbug at the moment. Friday is going to be a day of doing nothing as my family has cancelled coming over to see me. At least I won't have to try to clean the house to my DM's standards, but it also means I won't see my nephew until the New Year :(
I'll let you know if I survive the sweet making session. I'm not sure that me and boiling sugar is a good combination.

    Take care xxx

Thank you. :) Hubby was very lucky caught in an early stage. He had mouth cancer, discovered when he went to his GPs about a mouth ulcer he'd had a few months that hadn't healed. Please everyone, if that ever happens to you -get it checked out. It is over 3 years since it happened, so he's been unofficially told it's unlikely to be back. He wasn't high risk group being young-ish (early 40s), never smoked, doesn't drink spirits but of course that begs the question why he got it in the first place but it's under 5 years so he hasn't been discharged yet. Routine checks are down to 4 monthly -worst was the first year with monthly appts, you'd no sooner held your breath that the next check up was going to be clear, breathed a sigh of relief when it was when it was breath holding time again.

The money makes me more determined to make sure we live within our income. Doubtful we will ever receive a windfall like this again, so don't want to waste it. I discovered today that getting off the bus a stop early is cheaper - not sure by how much. House is probably in the middle of either stop. I've also had to go round my nans with my parents as she was imagining all sorts of stuff. Mum is at GPs tomorrow about it.

Spendless, wow! That's quite a sum of money. It's a very good idea that you are taking the time to consider what's the best use of your funds. Do you have any redemption penalties on your current mortgage? Martin has a tool somewhere which enables you to work out the best course of action for your money. There's also a tool to tell you how much you would need to earn in interest in order to beat your current mortgage rate.

Anyhoo, probably not making much sense so will meander off aimlessly. Really not very well today. Was awful yesterday and had to bow out of shopping with DS. I love Bath too but just couldn't stay upright yesterday morning. It makes you feel doubly bad though when you're ill on their birthday doesn't it :(?

Quick update on my Dad. Apparently this bladder cancer is entirely curable. My sis has said that there's no need for me to drop anything and get up there to see him and would rather I kept my snotty bugs to myself :o. It's just so totally up and down I'm finding it weird to get my head around it. Think little sister was perhaps being a bit of a drama queen last week by getting our friend to phone me. When you get a phonecall like that when you're doing the school run you kind of think . But then I suppose she is the one who has all the worries of taking him to and from his appointments and going through all of the treatments with him.
Eurgh, it's hard. I don't envy her position really because my sister and I both work and live far away, then there is half sister who's the one dealing with all of this and she doesn't work, spends lots of time with Dad, has 2 cars which he's given to her, he pays her and her DP's car insurance and home insurance etc etc, then there's her Brother and sister who live close but both work. They aren't much help either but also don't have the same relationship. I think if any of them had had the same amount of handouts from Dad over the years, they would feel more inclined to drop everything and help.

    Disfunctional eh? :o.
Need to wrap the presents today because we still haven't done it. We also have to go and get DS's Christmas present. That'll be fun when he doesn't know what he wants. DD is still in bed. I think she's feeling a bit rough too. I have at least managed to drag the hoover around today. I managed to empty and stack the dishwasher yesterday before having to lie down again. I'm getting there!
