Hi I put a ring onto ebay it sold today at buy it now price. Prompt email from buyer requesting more pictures and invoice and paypal id and a delivery address in an industrial estate in uk. All fine sent pics and a better description along with paypal invoice with in the hour.

Just received another email from buyer, explaining he works with a charity and has been very busy and wants the ring to be sent to a family member in africa. He said he has added extra postage to the invoice and wants it posted asap. Not a problem except no transaction from him on paypal, he put a paypal receipt no in his email. This is the first time i have sold anything on ebay and used my paypal to recieve money. Does it take time to show on account. Obviously im not going to post the ring until i get the payment, slightly uneasy about buyer due to change of delivery address perfect english in first email and broken in the second and he only set up his ebay account today, item was bought about 11 am.

Any advice gratefully appreciated, im probably been too cautious because its the first time ive used ebay and paypal for sell!

Hope this makes sense to someone

100% scam. Don't send. I'm about to read the thread and I'm guessing you've been told this.
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?

What - you thought two pages of posts may have been advising her to just send it?
  • Can I just add to this that you may actually receive a paypal payment?

It's another version of the scam going around. They will send you a payment from a stolen paypal account. They then send you a sob story, which ends with asking you to send the item to another address in Nigeria (usually).

Because you sent the item to the address NOT attached to paypal, you will lose your item and money.

I sold a laptop ages ago. The winner emailed me from an ebay account based in the UK. She sent payment from a stolen paypal account in the USA with another name. And the email asked for it to be posted to her 'son at university' in Nigeria. I refused, reported, and the money disappeared from my paypal account.

Never, ever, ever post items to an address different than their paypal account. Even if you get the payment.

My two cents! Don't let this put you off ebay. Just relist the item, and put in your buyer conditions that you don't post outside of the EU.

It's a never a good idea to show your ebay listings & id on here.

Anna Licious thank for that. I'll keep that in mind. Ebay emailed to say the buyer had deleted his account. Glad thats done, his emails were annoying to say the least. Thanks again for everyones advice. I'll hold of on selling the ring on ebay for now.

I dont think the listing id is relevant anyway!
  • I had a very similiar situation.., only with a car. It wouldn't sell.., and suddenly I had a super generous offer from some Nigerian saying they'd send me a cheque for more than the car was advertised for, it would be collected and i was to pay the collection people with the excess money.

It sounded too good to be true so even tho I was brimming with eagerness to get the damn car off my hands, I contacted the fraud squad in Scotland Yard. They confirmed how the scam worked (i.e. u end up not only losing the car, having the cheque cancelled days after u have not only let the collection company take the car but paid them to do it lol).

I sent the Nigerian a mail saying I'd referred the matter to the fraud squad. Never heard from them again.

Try that approach lol. I hope it helps.

Yes. Maybe the scammer had set up lots of MSE accounts as part of the scam. And had then directed them to ask for advice on MSE. And...

OK it was a stupid post by me.
