  • when i have had to do it the requirement was for people to meet the very basic levels of literacy and maths. it was shocking how many people used to fail. i guess that is why they dont set it a little harder like your example question.
the answer is d by the way incase you were wondering if i knew the answer.

    Oi, without a calculator :D
  • I knew the answer, do they teach probability too? i.e work out the probability of these basic sums helping you compete for 10 jobs?

A youngster I know had to do a maths assessment for his apprentice scheme. He posted on his facebook a picture of one of the questions:

    Formula K = ab + c/2

    where a = 3, b = 4 and c = 6

He had absolutely no idea of how to start it. Said he wished he'd listened more at school, and couldn't even take a guess of how to start.

I thought this was quite shocking - am I being harsh? I did do A level maths, and maths as part of my degree, so perhaps I'm not being fair - what do others think?
i remember a big issue for me during the 2 years doing gcse maths was being in a class with people who simply werent capable. the teacher spent a short while trying to teach us the harder stuff but because so many simply couldnt get it she gave up and went back to teaching us the easier stuff. as a result i ended up doing the 2 papers were the maximum grade available was d.

Quite apart from asking "what public toilets? (there is only one public toilet here in Leeds city centre. Most establishments use their own staff), you should be aghast at JobCente + advertising a sex worker vacancy a few years ago:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-489964/Job-Centre-seeks-women-strip-8-hour-webcam-performers.html

    and:

    http://www.articlesbase.com/news-and-society-articles/job-centre-seeks-sex-worker-404210.html

    and this oddity:

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23509596-job-centre-advertises-for-naked-cleaner-pound10-an-hour-but-only-pound6-if-youre-fully-clothed.do

Funnily enough, Jaqueline Gold of Ann Summers fame (She is the chairwoman I think) took action against the Job Centre (rightly in my view) as they banned vacancies placed by managers of her stores. Whatever one thinks of Ann Summers, this is a totally different proposition to performing in front of a webcam or cleaning for strangers in the nude!

Exactly. Well put. I have been looked down on for doing a sex chatline job but the nude webcam and nude cleaning etc job adverts now displayed in Job Centres are far worse.
    The hypocrisy is astounding.
And if a claimant applies for one of these jobs and then changes his/her mind they can be santioned. And so they would have to take the job. Some people would call that pimping.

One cannot look down on darklady and say you'd rather sweep the streets and clean toilets rather than do what she did working on a sex chatline job and at the same time FAIL to be critical of the Jobcentre for placing vacancies that on the face of it are FAR seedier.

The problem with the Job Centre is they have a poor record in vetting what is appropriate and what isn't. This is why we end up with non-jobs placed by agencies, dodgy marketing jobs (promising you a managerial position within six months when it's commission only door knocking) and poorly worded vacancies leaving you non the wiser as to what the job entails.

So it's little wonder that someone can place an ad for webcam sex workers and nude cleaners!
