Servicing my laptop - has anyone used the Geek Squad?

Uninstall:
BT NetProtect Plus McAfee, Inc. 14/10/2011 10.0.587 (If it's not there to protect the children from dodgy websites)
BT Yahoo! Applications 13/10/2011
Optional, if you decide to go for AVAST instead:
McAfee Security Scan Plus McAfee, Inc. 13/10/2011 2.0.181.2
BT NetProtect Plus McAfee is the full BT AV suite! I agree it's not very good but it shouldn't be uninstalled without an alternative to replace it.
McAfee Security Scan Plus on the other hand seems to be some rubbish that tells you the AV suite is switched on.0 -

Avast was suggested earlier.... and also in my post(the one that you quoted). Trying to run all of that on 512MB RAM was bound to come to grief.
Do we have the RAM spec for the machine or at least the make and model of machine?0 -
I know, Avast is a good choice. I was just pointing out that you haven't put netprotect as optional potentially leaving her with no AV.Avast was suggested earlier.... and also in my post(the one that you quoted). Trying to run all of that on 512MB RAM was bound to come to grief.

Now have the latest version of Adobe Reader, thanks.
TakeThis, have deleted the two Yahoo items.
Time for bed. My road to Geekdom will have to continue on Sunday. Another few days of this and I may well apply for Steve Job's job (bet you can't say that when you're drunk!).
Night everyone, thanks for all your help.

Indeed I meant to put both of them together, but I hestitated as I wanted confirmation that she wasn't using NetProtect for any children in the home.
McAfee Security Scan Plus

McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool
She can download and save Avast 6, uninstall the McAfee stuff and run the Removal Tool, reboot and then install Avast 6. Untick the options to anonymously send info, to make Google Chrome your Default Browser and to install Google Chrome(especially as you already have it).
She's probably paying for McAfee.
She can keep it, but then should really get more RAM.0 -
Can you imagine how the Geek squad would cope with something like this? - they'd take an age remotely then probably give up saying it needs windows reloading and more memory..... £250 later...........I'm quite sure that there's far more technical knowledge in this forum than the avertage Geek Squad employee would ever know (or care about)

any monkey can increase the ram on a laptop
simply unscrew the cover and squeeze the clips to release
ram is real cheap at the mo
reinstalling windows is also a monkeys job
remove the hard drive and the cover
place hard drive in docking staion attatched to another pc or laptop
format the drive ( takes about two minutes )
do not format the partition on the hard drive that contains the drivers
or get the drivers off the manufacturers website and load them onto that drive into a partition you create or bang the drivers on a flashdrive/dongle or a cd/dvd
chuck your windows disc into the comp and install windows

Although I suspect karl is fairly accurately describing how most large 'support' companies like Geek Squad might do it... load the OS and let the customer fathom out any critical updates of which there are usually at least 100 even with W7
I also suspect he's not far from describing 'any old monkey' as who might do the job, I can't see highly skilled 'IT engineers' really doing all these mundane jobs for likes of Geeks, Techguys etc although I'm sure they do have some skilled and interested staff.

Why would you remove the HD and drop it in a caddy ?. The Dell Inspiron 9300 has a built-in optical drive (on the left hand side).Never Knowingly Understood.
