I love this thread when it works well - it's such a positive thing overall and people are so welcome and helpful:D
Enough of the smushy stuff from me now... DH's birthday tomorrow - means I need a trip to Waitrose for cake - not at all OS but terribly scrummy (may have to browse the other aisles whilst I'm there....:shhh: just to check things, of course....)
Sold some books at WI tonight - raised the grand sum of £2.88:rotfl: - ah well, a lot of the rest can go to the dog/ cat rescue centre - hopefully they'll have more luck in selling them! I also sold 3 things on fleabay too - one of which was a free gift I got when ordering some stationery supplies - sold for £11:j Not going to change my standard of living or anything, but it's all good..
Oh - and whilst the mardy art-er is missing - I bought kale whoopseied last night - bleurgh!! Going to feed it to the guinea pig. BUT... on a better note - we've not had rain in days - the heating hasn't been on yet and we've got 2 back doors and several windows open during the day....... Still wearing vest tops in the day, no scks and everyone still has summer duvets on their beds... (now runs off to hide before all the other OS-ers start throwing things at me!)

Another lurker coming out of the woodwork. I love this thread as there is always something new and interesting being discussed. Can I ask you all a question as there has already been some mention on this new thread about savings. We (OH and I) are OAP's. How much is enough savings to have salted away do you think? I would like some decent holidays before I get too old to enjoy them so would rather spend than save. How much is enough?Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot. :think:0

Hi Ches, Welcome back
I don't think that there is a right answer to your question. We aren't yet OAP's; we are late forties and have children who are still in education, so our circumstances will be very different to yours.
However, I have always been a saver and over the years have saved a fair amount. I believe that for people still working it's a good idea to have six months salary in the bank if you can. I don't know how that would relate to your own circumstances.
Saying that, in recent years our savings have been earning next to nothing, so this summer we took the head staggers and 'blew' about 15% of our savings on a family holiday for six of us to the Caribbean. Being used to going to a caravan in France it was the sort of holiday that previously I could only have dreamed of. To some people that would seem like complete and utter madness, but to us it was sooo worth every penny to have one last big family holiday and make great memories for us all before the kids fly the nest.
To spend or to save is really a personal choice that nobody but you can decide. I will always keep some savings, but, especially since interest rates have fallen, I want to balance my saving with living a little too.

Yayyyy, we have a new playpen, many thanks.

Hello Cleggie, Mishmogs, Minihauk, Mrs Optimist, Bigjenny, Hummingfridge, Lisakay, GreyhoundAngel, Alexandrasupertramp, Pukkamum and Battleon, Liloandstitch, Ches and Nursey3.Gosh, I had no idea we had so many lurkers. Hope I didn't forget anybody. Anyone else out there, please come and play.
Scottishminnie, I am reeling in shock that you only have 3 tins of tomatoes. Good grief!!!! I can spare a couple; catch! And the others are right about the horseradish; it's rampageous and impossible to get rid of once it is in open ground. Was it very wrong of me to grin at the thought of your OH's buffet encounter?:o I suspect so.
Katieowl thank goodness things are on the way to getting sorted with your son's travel funding. These things are enough to drive you crazy, aren't they? I think it is very hard that youngsters get so little help. It's like they are neither fish nor fowl at that age and the Bank of Mum and Dad is expected to keep forking out. Of course, people want to help their lads and lassies but with budgets so tight for so many of us, there may be very little to help with. Fingers crossed!
Josiejump, it was me who remarked that you can't use low energy bulbs with timers (or dimmer switches, apparently). I have seen this in several books and on the packaging of the bulbs themselves. I honestly don't know what happens if you do but I expect someone on t'internet via Mr Google will be able to tell you. I don't have dimmers anymore and my uplighter is the only thing which gets used on a timer so that has a 40 watt conventional bulb and that's the only one at the homestead which isn't a low-energy bulb.
Mrs Chip well done on your business getting cleared for takeoff. I'll have a double portion of chips with lotsa ketchup, if you'd be so kind. All the best for your launch. Hey, have you seen Pukkamum's brill avatar. Oh, I do like a pie.......:rotfl:
Ches re savings levels; like Pink says, it's very hard to tell as it's highly personal to an individual's circumstances. You mention that you and your OH are pensioners but that could easily encompass a 2-3 decade age range. Do you own your home? If so, you'll have costs that a tenant like me wouldn't have; repairs/ replacements/ buildings insurance/ gas servicing etc etc. If you own, is it a lovely old home which eats money or something very modern which could reasonably be expected not to need major works in your lifetime?
There are so many factors, such as hobbies, pet ownership, car ownership, desire for holidays, commitments to family etc etc that one size of savings can't fit everyone.
My own cost of living is pretty low but then so is my income.;) I choose to maintain a hefty wodge of savings as I am single and have chronic health problems which already restrict the hours I can work and which could worsen without any warning (consultant has warned of this possibility). So, given my personal circumstances, I am a small-c conservative with money and could support myself for a year at a very modest level with nil income. After that, I shall handknit a black balaclava and come around to raid your larders for tinned tomatoes and h.m. goodies.:D Don't say I didn't warn you........:rotfl:
Pink I think your decision to have the big family holiday was exactly the right one. Building memories is what it is all about.
A bloke I used to work with always said that he and the missus were going to make efforts to give their brood good holidays between ages 5 and 15. His logic seemed excellent to me; he said that much younger than 5 and anywhere with sand and water would do and they wouldn't remember if it was anywhere exotic. And, after 15, they'd probably not want to holiday with Mum & Dad anyway........
Oooff, let's put the radio on very quietly and see what's happening in the big wide world. I bet someone's up to no good.
Have a good day, everybody, and I'm going to follow that linkie to see what Kittie's new thread is like, as I've always enjoyed and valued her posts.
