If you broke up and it was not her fault I think you are very mean to even think about getting the ring back.

Although Judge Judy always seems to rule that an engagement ring is given in contemplation of marriage, and if that marriage doesn't occur, then the ring is returned...but maybe English Law is different..? It was always my belief (rightly or wrongly) that if the girl broke the engagement, then she had to return the ring as she was rejecting the promise of marriage - however, if the man broke it off, he is not entitled to it back.
  • Is she called Laura and live in Saintfield direction by any chance?
  • Bear in mind also that the value of the ring will be no where in the region of the price you paid for it...

Only if you bought on the high-street.. it's not uncommon to get your ring valued as much higher as the purchase cost

Section 3(1) of the The Law Reform (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1970, would allow the groom to recover the ring if it was given “on the condition (express or implied) that it shall be returned if the agreement is terminated”.

Section 3(2) states that the gift of an engagement ring is presumed to be an ABSOLUTE GIFT, but that presumption may be rebutted by proving that the ring was given on the condition, express or implied, that it should be returned if a marriage did not take place.

I don't want to give details since this is a local site but not everything is so black and white. At this point in time I could do be doing with some money and hence my query on here, that is all. I didn't ask for and would rather not have moral judgements being made on my behalf

If it was not her fault , then leave the girl have the ring. Dont rub salt onto the wounds by trying to get it back.

If it's a very recent acrimonious breakup, then ask again in a few weeks...she may decide by then that giving it back gets rid of memories as well as you.

    Who broke off the engagement?

If you did, she gets to keep it, if she did she should return it.

Where does it say that in law?
