    I watch Judge Judy(yes sad I know):o

But one case was the girl refusing to return engagement ring when they broke up. Didn't get married.

It was ruled the ring was a gift on the condition that a marriage would take place. As it did not then the ring was the property of the buyer of said ring. She had to give it back.
  • Appreciate everyones comments. Even Steveymp who went to extra mile to point out lessons that are fairly obvious now. I intend to speak to a solicitor to hopefully get an idea of where I stand.

It would cost you more taking it to court for its return than the ring is now worth.

    Who broke off the engagement?

If you did, she gets to keep it, if she did she should return it.
  • When my husband broke up with his ex-financee she gave the ring back (cost £3.5K) and then she asked him for it back because she wanted to sell it for the money - she actually told him that. You can imagine what he said to her so we now have the old engagement ring floating around our house somewhere.
  • I love Judge Judy... she's very blunt and to the point and I usually agree with her judgement. I only wish that most of our judges were like her.

However, I did actually always think that if an item was given as a gift, like your ring, then it does not have to be returned. However, I personally wouldn't want the ring so would give it back (or throw it depending on if they'd finished with me or not)! :)

You also have to ask yourself why you want the ring back... and is it all really worth it?

not if you just bypass a Solicitor and raise a Small Court Claim,
  • Bear in mind also that the value of the ring will be no where in the region of the price you paid for it...

Unless the ring was a family heirloom it is considered to be the property of the woman and she has the right to keep it from what I understand.
