we always used to eat raw steak sausages, Never pork!! When i was pregnant with my son i worked in the hospital and always had a few raw sausages in my bag, they are gorgeous but the midwife told me off because apparently it could cause miscarriage??? I dunno, i still eat them now and again, my kids dont like them though. My dad was a chef too so they cant be that bad for you.

I have read this thread with interest because I also remember trying raw sausage and really liking it AND being too scared to eat it because of risk of tapeworms.... I think the reason is that sausagemeat (and bacon) contained sodium nitrite -saltpetre- in it, which is what gives that sort of tasty zizz on the tongue if you eat it raw. The sodium nitrite was there to stop bacteria growing, so it would have been saving the raw sausage eater from poisoning at the same time as causing them to eat it in the first place!

Nowadays sausages tend to use different preservatives, and in fact the cheaper ones are coloured as well to mimic the pink colouring that sodium nitrite used to give.
