Eating Raw Sausages?

This has nothing to do with money saving but I just want to know if this was normal back in the day! I can remember being told by my mother about her getting into trouble for eating raw sausages (1940's) (she had been sent to butchers to buy some!) and I remember eating raw pork sausages myself back in the 1970's! This came back to me when I was chatting to my daughter in law who had recently discovered that her mum had eaten raw sausages! I just wish to point out that the thought of eating raw sausages now makes me feel quite ill! But was it something that other people remember doing or is it just a weird thing that my mother and I and my daughter in laws mother did?

I heard a story once about a butcher who used to munch the little leftover bits as he was making the sausages, he ended up with a tapeworm that was attributed to it.

I don't fancy eating any undercooked meat, never mind eating it raw. Yuck!

  • As far as I remember (and it's a longtime ago!) I didn't become ill! It was just strange to discover that it wasn't just a family thing and that other people (so far all women!) did the same thing. Maybe it was a missing mineral or vitamin that we needed! But I know that I would never do it now or allow anyone I know to do it :) J

A friend used to do this, and this was the early 80's. After some encouragement I tried one. Never had one again as it was foul, plus my mum would have gone ape if she knew.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

  • I was in a Farnborough one day a couple of years ago and I can picture this even now, there was a young chap sitting on one of the seats quite happily munching away on a pack of raw sausages! Got the impression he had less than full mental capacity from his mannerisms etc (would have got that impression without the sausages!). My mate and I could not believe out eyes, did not even know anyone else had done that before this post!

  • In germany they eat raw minced meat on bread with onions... tastes really very nice!

Never heard of this though x

Hi, I remember my mother scraping the sausagemeat out of the casing and spreading it on a sandwich. She ate it with just salt and pepper on. This was back in the 60's and it used to make me feel sick then. _pale_ She enjoyed it though!

My mother used to eat the scrapings too and I often had a little taster. Not surprised I havent eaten meat for over 25 years
