Which Printer?

I'm no expert on printers, but some makes are reckoned to be better than others for some things, and the same goes for models.
The trouble is that in the past, you wouldn't have expected that much from a 'home' printer, or even a 'home / office' printer. If you were going to print photos, you'd get a photo printer and expect to pay a fair bit for it, and pay out for proper photo paper too.
But now, every printer is supposed to do everything, and also be a scanner / copier as well, and all for £50.
Mind you, the computer magazines seem to run regular 'best printer' reviews, could be worth looking out for one of those.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Was the one you got for your Mum a scanner and copier too?
Might be useful for some friends who want to get pc's who are on tight budgets...

PS. I just checked the sx125 on which...doesn't rate that highly (41%) but like the ink cartridges for the sx130 are perfectly reasonable on ebay....5 for £9....maybe 10 for £17....or so...not as cheap as my beloved DX but still....same price as my canon...

Only one I can recommend is a Hewlett Packard all-in-one. Had my photosmart for years, and its been hassle free, unlike the espson one I had, and the expensive Lexmark i ditched (inks horrendously priced).

Don't confuse old HP machines with the tat they put out these days.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
from Tesco contain 3 bottles of coloured inks, a small twist drill (with a handle to use between fingers) the correct rubber bungs to close the holes and a hypodermic (to be washed with running water after each use). There is also a version with black ink. I'm surprised that they are not more popular, given the massive reduction in costs they produce. I recently read an artice that pointed out that the ink in branded inkjet cartridges was the most expensive fluid - of any kind - that is on general retail sale in the world. Yes, more expensive than pure channel No 5 perfume essence, or any other precious liquid you can mention. Outrageous.0

Personally, these days I would tend to buy HP because I have found them the easiest of all machines to set up and run. Epson can be a PITA because you can't recycle the cartridges (or never used to be able to), and they are 'fussy' about cheap imitations (refusing to recognise them sometimes). BUT for what Mum wants (basically an occasional photocopier), this is ideal. At least it will be if the ink doesn't dry up between uses!
I'd never touch Canon again, which may be my personal bias, but the last Canon we had nearly went through the window so many times. We were trying to use it with a Linux machine, and Canon and Linux don't speak to each other, apparently, but honestly, why not?
The last time I used a refilling kit, I got black ink all over my favourite pink trousers. so I'm afraid that's a 'never again' for me. I do, however, use an excellent local cartridge refilling service, from whom I get EXCELLENT service.from Tesco contain 3 bottles of coloured inks, a small twist drill (with a handle to use between fingers) the correct rubber bungs to close the holes and a hypodermic (to be washed with running water after each use). I have used bulk ink to re-fill cartridges for 4 or 5 years and have never spoiled a pair of pink trousers. I have got ink on my fingers occasionally, and have had to wash them, but I've also got inky fingers changing cartridges in the past. When complete set of branded ink can cost £50 or more it's worth having a set of pink pants just for ink changing.0

I've had very mixed experiences with compatible Canon cartridges. The chip in the original Canon cartridges must be a very complicated thing because few compatible manufacturers manage to copy it properly - result, endless error messages, warnings of low ink on new cartridges etc. Even refilled cartridges have caused me problems. I've now dumped my Canon printer and have changed to Epson simply because the compatible cartridges are so much better.

I just got my refill ink from Amazon like yesterday..
Came with free flush - 30ml of the three colours plus 60ml of black....
Can't recall the capacity of the canon cartridges. Can't recall if it's 9ml or 18ml....does anyone know?
But know it has one HUGE black cartridge and one smaller one...
Kit came with syringe and everything by looks of it...will post in a few months to let you know how I get on but it says it does 1800 printers and faxes apart from epson which need a chip resetting kit....
