Is Sky broadband any good?

I am currently with Talk Talk (previously Tiscali) and have had so many problems with them, including being signed up to an 18 month contract which I did not agree to
At the time my options were limited to staying with TT, moving to BT or 02, neither of which were offering very good deals so I stayed with TT.
However, I recently checked SamKnows & it turns out Sky now offer LLU broadband & the packages seem quite tempting, especially the unlimited broadband.
Can anyone recommend Sky? I have had tv with them in the past but not now. And how about their phone service, is it as good as BT?
I've always been reluctant to move my phone line from BT for fear of any problems costing a fortune to resolve.
I am having ongoing problems with Talk Talk. Unreliable connection, slow download speeds. I seem to be on the phone to their technical department every few weeks. They also try to sign me up to another 18 month contract by stealth. I have refused so I have my options open. Trying to compare all the different options is a nightmare. Is their a website I can visit that has tools to carry out a comparison?0 -
Start with an exchange search on https://www.samknows.com to look for your other LLU options.
if you are already on a TT LLU connection, the you may have no option but a return to donor back to BT first (which requires a 12m line rental contract)-LLU to LLU direct is rarely possible.
I suggest that you post your issues and router stats on here, you'll find the advice rather more helpful than anything TT will provide. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yes, I've had Sky broadband unlimited for about a year now with no problems. Speeds are constantly at 8-9 mbps which might not be the advertised up to 20 mbps but it's good enough to play 1080p at youtube without stopping. Customer service is excellent so far. WHEN THEY TOLD ME THEY WILL CALL ME BACK TO ASSESS A PROBLEM, THEY ACTUALLY CALLED ME BACK. So much better than orange's customer service. Overall I'm a happy Sky customer.
Up to - they say UP TO and that's what they're giving you. Think yourself lucky, my speeds are awful (not sky's fault), less 1mb - haven't checked it for ages. You tube is out of the question.0 -
I went from a terrible frustrating 3 years of AOL to Sky, and now i have never had a problem what so ever, speeds are as advertised and its running smooth for me. I did the 12month one off payment too and there's not a glitch as of yet (7 Months) on.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0

This is quite annoying in my opinion. To me, it shows that BT still do have the monopoly on Telecoms in this country.
Luckily for me I'm happy with Sky and even though I'm not tied into them anymore I'll probably stay put.
Hopefully we'll see the interconnectivity between LLU operators improve.
I'm working on a project at work at the moment that will allow a new to the market LLU operator (won't say who) capture customers from both Talk Talk/CPW and Sky. As portability is a reciprocal process, things should start to get interesting soon

I can't recommend Sky (because I won't recommend anything near the Murdoch family) and I have always had my telephony with cable / ntl / Virgin and I have been very happy with their service and quality.
As I understand it most areas in the UK are serviced by two sets of copper wire (for telephony, cable tv and Internet) and their respective exchanges: one from the incumbent telco BT and one from a competitor (mostly Virgin). Most of the other vendors repackaged either BTs or Virgins hardware. So if your BT Internet isn't any good and your Sky uses the BT exchange I can't see why it should be any better?
Can anybody explain, please?0 -
It doesn't have to BT Retail just a BT(Openreach) based landline ie Post Office.Vivaciti.IDNet etc there are alternatives to BT Retail for telephone if you look and also on shorter contracts.0 -
