The banks make huge profits and allowed to screw up the economy. People have become very complacent about allowing banks walk all over them, so it is right the goverment brings them to task with this ATM problem. Why should people be charged for trying access there money. I pay a monthly fee for my account so why should I have to pay to get money. Paying to put money into an account is just a total rip off. They make millions in profits and most pay very little taxes as they all use off shore accounts to launder there business dealings. Its time they were brought to boot0

            It's quite outrageous.
Think back. Basic Bank Accounts were created for several reasons. The main one being was to get rid of weekly Giro's and Bank accounts had to be created for those who didn't have one, hence the Basic Bank Account.
There's a huge amount of monies being paid into these accounts by government (and they're/we're getting charged for the privilage), but it's still a cheaper payment method than payment by gyro.
If you're a customer of Banks that are doing this or planning to do this why not give them hell. You never know if and when you may need a Basic Bank Account.
There's another way to tackle the Banks on this and that is for consumers to support each other.0 -

Erm, they are not charging for ATM use, they are restricting use of ATMs for Basic accounts to their own group ATMs, at least read the thread before posting.
You obviously dont have a Basic account, otherwise you wouldnt be paying a fee for it. They are free to open and free to use, providing you dont go overdrawnDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0 -
I have actually written to my MP twice on Basic Bank Accounts and the way people are treated. According to Martin the BBA says every one is entitled to a Basic Account. Yeah but try and get one. They Lie and cheat to get you out of the bank and fail you without offering a Basic Account. And now they want to get rid of those who have an account. Where are these people suppose to go. If you work, the chances are your money is paid in to an account, whether you like it or not. Nationwide have severly curtailed how you get money out from them and now the others are on the bandwagon. OK it is not the banks fault but I live in a small village and my partner is disabled. If she lived on he rown she would be up the creek. One bus every hour and a three hour return journey just to get to a machine. There is a free one only ywo miles away but no bus service to it. The whole lot of them are a disgrace and the two owned by us the tax payer should be made to help people as it is us keeping them going. Personalyy I would have let them go down. Why are we bailing out Scottish banks who`s own government would not lift a finger for them or us.
As for the answer about a Prepaid Mastercard, what he fails to mention is that there are charges when you use an ATM and sometimes on the INternet or shops depending who you go with. I use them for the Internet and when abroad by having Stirling and Euro cards
"Two of Britain's largest banks have been told to justify restrictions on basic account customers using rivals' ATMs ..."

I don't really have any idea what you're on about. The banks make huge profits and allowed to screw up the economy. Sorry.
As for the bolded bit, would you like to provide specific examples of how they avoid tax?0 -

Tha answer is to get out enough to last the week or whatever.
Or use the Post Office.0 -

Sorry to be so direct, but the hyperbole over this is ridiculous. If having to get money out before work is your idea of a nightmare, I am really envious of your life. And if it is so much of a nightmare, you could just get another account.
NO, you cannot get another account as they will not offer you a basic account. What they will do is offer you a normal and then to a credit check and kick you out, ruining your rating even firther in the process.0 -

People say this but I find it hard to believe. Grow a backbone and when they offer you a normal account, tell them no and that you want a basic account. Do this at every bank and building society, THEN I will believe it is the case. Or apply online/by phone where available.
I'm sure it's not particularly easy to do, but I find it incredibly hard to believe it's impossible.0 -
Especially when some banks allow you to apply for a Basic account onlineDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

You must be very high up the chain if that's the case..
We received an internal memo in response to the media coverage. The message was clear.0
