Seller hasn't received item but wont accept my offer to provide proof of postage

  • The only thing I've found a bit odd is that the buyer keeps ignoring my offer to see the proof of postage, even though they initially asked for tracking, but that's probs just me over-analyzing.

why would they need to see it? its your responsibilty to put in a claim not theirs and it has nothing to do with tracking.

Also your stars may suffer if you start charging for recorded on everything, buyers dont like feeling like they have paid extra for some thing they don't need. Also a lot of sellers don't bother with it as, like Soolin said, it doesn't always track and gives no more protection than regular 1st or 2nd class with proof of posting.

Yeah, I'm not wanting to play those kind of games, I just want to resolve it.

It's the seller who has a contract with RM, not the buyer. You need to refund the buyer & then claim from RM.
I wouldn't want the proof of postage as a buyer, I would immediately think that you were trying to shirk your responsibilities as a seller.

Incidentally, virtually everyone asks for tracking even though they know a seller rarely has it. Somewhere buried in the help pages the advice that ebay gives to a buyer about a lost package is to ask seller for tracking first- before going to a dispute. A lot of people ask , I suspect, because they htink it is a requirement to do so before ebay allow them to open a dispute.

Another one of those stupid bits in the help pages probably left over from rules that changed many years ago.

The proof of posting shows you posted it, not that it arrived, and delivery is the sellers' responsibility.

offering your buyer POP is irrelevant for a buyer whose item has not arrived. It's for you to make a claim from RM, which has nothing to do with the buyer.

Don't make you buyer wait until you have claimed from RM because if they open an INR case they will be refunded and you will have a mark against your selling account.

So it's in your interests to refund your buyer promptly then claim from RM.

I aggree it's a pants service as it isn't guaranteed.

However, as a buyer, I would be put off by the cost of special delivery (the only one that is guearanteed), so I'll offer recorded so at least if someone has received the item, there is proof of receipt for me.

Thanks again for the additional advice, I can make my claim tomorrow (15 days after posting) so I'll contact the buyer to update them.

You need to be refunding your buyer now, not waiting for your claim to be settled with RM.

Thanks for this perspective - I just thought it would reassure the seller that the item had been sent to prevent them from making a claim against me too soon (I first offered this when the buyer made the initial enquiry 5 days after the item was posted).

Anyway, I've taken on the advice to refund the buyer & hope that RM aren't too slow in refunding me.

Recorded is no good at all in many areas as it never shows as delivered, so all you end up with is an expensive piece of paper to prove posting- exactly what you get for free with POP.

You cannot win an INR claim with recorded if it doesn't show as delivered. I can't remember the last time i signed for a recorded item to my address.

I realise that, but it's more for the fact that if someone DOES receive the item, they can't then go on to make a false INR claim.

I realise that sounds overly suspicious on my part, but it's just trying to give myself a bit of protection.

If you look at it the other way, as it often doesn't update if the postie even asks for a signature, then you could get people claiming INR, as they know you still can't prove delivery.
Also on items that would normally go through the letter box, if a signature is asked for then your buyer may have to take an expensive inconvenient trip to collect something if they're out.

You are assuming though that item is signed for. You just make it easier for scammers to prove they haven't got an item if the postman delivers it without waiting for a sig.

I used to have to use recorded for work, but even they have now realised how daft it is when everything was arriving but nothing at all was ever signed for.

All good food for thought, and something for me to consider next time I list items.

Like I said, I'd only consider not offering standard delivery on more expensive items though.
Things selling upto say £10 aren't worth the extra cost & effort unles the buyer speciffically selects registered.
