The descent into chaos and humour on Phil's threads is usually a collective sign that everyone's patience has been exhausted; that they're fed up having given sensible advice and knowing that he will ignore it yet again and carry on whining. I give him the benefit of the doubt again and again on his threads, but really I've learned over the months that there's no point, so it would probably be better if I just stayed away and let him wallow in misery. That is after all what he wants; unless he leaves here and gets himself to a doctor and/or counsellor, his 'problems' won't change one jot. He'll still be chasing some elusive purpose and/or happiness when he's 45, bald and still in a bedroom in his parents' house. Unless as I suspect he's a troll.
Yes I'm in a take-no-prisoners mood this morning; probably best if I keep a low profile.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0 -

No I had trouble getting home last night after a long long day because of the travel disruption and am caring for DW who broke her leg yesterday morning - not had a lot of sleep so have f-all patience with Phil's self-pitying BS today.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0 -
The problem is people do a degree with no direct career path afterwards and then don't know what to do with their degree and complain there aren't jobs suited to what they did at uni.
It happens with so many people they go and do a course they think they'll enjoy and are really no better off for having done it. Especially arts degrees - research has shown that over a lifetime you're financially worse off (on average obviously) having done an arts degree than if you'd left education at 18 and got a job by the time student loans and 3 years loss of earnings are taken into account.
I made this mistake myself - I did a course I thought looked amazing and I thought it would have good career prospects cos this is what I was told but in reality there's !!!!!! all I can do with it now that will pay more than 13k. So I did a masters and am now doing a PhD and at least I'll be able to do what I enjoy and earn enough to live on.
If you don't know what you want to do when you finish get any old job until you do have a better idea. Even if you know what you want chances are an opportunity wont arise straight away. I know people with PhDs working in bars and call centres until they can get a job they like. I know exactly what I want to do now but the job opportunites come around maybe once a year so I'll probably end up working in a pub until I see a job opening and there's nothing wrong with that.
It's not the end of the world if you finish Uni and have to do a job that a non graduate could do, or have no idea what you want yet. And if your friends are going to do better than you surely your should be happy for them and not jealous/competitive cos you're not as good as them! I know I'll never earn as much as some of my friends and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference. If I felt some of my friends were competitive with me over salaries I'd think they were pathetic (and stupid as I'm never going to earn big money)0 -
It is probably a male thing to want to do better than your friends.
I always found it important to out perform my friends at school and I feel it is important to out perform them careers wise because of that.:beer:0
