it should do, try f9 and see if you get any repair or install options0

thanks for your suggestion but still nothing is happening. I pressed f9 then pressed enter to confirm reload default configuration but nothing. I think I'll have to give up for tonight as I have an early start tomorrow. Thanks very much everyone who has replied :beer:0

once you set the optical drive to be the first boot device, then it's (usually) F10 to save the settings and exit BIOS - it will have the keys listed down the side or the bottom of the screen for your model/BIOS. This will then exit BIOS and start the pc booting, from the disk in the cd drive (which is why you need to have the cd in the drive when the pc powers up, otherwise it'll boot from the hdd), then follow the rest of the instructions on the UKT page I gave you......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
A quick update for those who were kind enough to offer their help to me with this! I got the disc to run eventually but it made no difference
, the thing is as dead as it was.
So my question now is, can it be used for anything given I have no internet, none of the usb points are working, iTunes isn't finding anything...... or is it headed for the bin? I think I know the answer but thought I'd ask anyway.
Thanks.0 -
which disc to run, and how did it make no difference, what happened? it wasn't dead before.!!

Hi, the recovery disc. It just ran, think it restarted but everything was the same as it was.
Someone had asked what it was I deleted, I remembered later that it was only things that said never or rarely used on the remove program list, and last used x years ago. Just something I remembered!0 -
it ran?
did it reinstall windows or not? if it's the same as before, then it's probably the latter.!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
it did run and I presumed it had reinstalled windows, I didn't get a message to say there was an error or anything. I will maybe try it again.0

I am posting this from the back-from-the-dead laptop! I can't believe it. I've got a device manager box full of stuff! A million trillion thanks to all who posted their advice. I ran the recovery disc again and tried the non-destructive option again but this didn't work again so I went for the system recovery quick format option and all is well. I can't believe it, I'm over the moon. Now to download antivirus, iTunes and try and find software for the wireless adapter..... A massive thanks again.0
