southoftheriver wrote: »Hello all,
Just out of interest, how to people split the bills when they first start dating someone? I've been seeing someone for about 6 weeks and everytime the bill comes he says "shall we split this?" Now i'm fine with sharing the bill but it would be nice to treat each other too. I've now started just paying the bill at times. Another thing is that he's asked me to meet his friends at a meal at a michelin starred restaurant. Lovely and all, but in the email he said "it will only be £30 plus wine and service (around £50), a bargain and i'd love to show you off." This made me feel really weird for a number of reasons. I have a well paid job but also have a loan to pay off which he is aware of, and i've never spent anything near that amount on dinner, I still find pizza express posh! It's a michelin starred restaurant so would be great food, but seems a very formal way to meet people for the first time. I have mentioned all of this and was told "well if its about the money you can pay me back." He has since mentioned the restaurant about six times even though I keep saying no! I'm not in the habit of borrowing money just so I can eat at a posh restaurant so I politely declined, but its left me wondering.
If the situation were reversed i'd want him to meet the people in my life in more casual surroundings but if it were a dinner, I would pay for it. In fact we are having a formal do at work with tickets and planned to buy him one (it is a similar price to the meal but a once a year thing). We aren't at the point of buying each other gifts or spending significant amounts on each other so realistically I probably wouldn't have gone to the meal anyway, but am I feel a bit weird about the whole thing and i'm not really sure why... maybe i'm making something of nothing?
Thank you for listening to my rambling. My friends mainly think that because he didn't pay in full on the first day I shouldn't even have gone on any more dates but in the main i've never had a problem splitting 50/50 before, its just this...
I would stand my ground (but I am like that any-way)!
I would mention this to him (I quote):
"In fact we are having a formal do at work with tickets and planned to buy him one (it is a similar price to the meal but a once a year thing)".
OR
say nothing but ask him for the money for the do you are having at work!
You have had to pay out for the meal he has invited you to, but he will have to fork out too.“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning,
but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

I tried to find out for you.
I did an advance search on google with the sentence 'icing has to be spread thinly on a large cake'
All it brought up was this thread and Russell Grant's horoscopes - and was in the Aries section!
I think only Russell knows what he meant by that. Not Rachmaninov
