Free Internet - Exchange Upgrade

Hello all

I have just had three(!) salesman together at my door telling me that I am entitled to free internet access now that my local exchange has been upgraded. To get this I wouldn't have to change my service provider (Virgin Media), but it would mean I would be paying a good £20 less each month for the services I was getting. All they had to do was come inside and check my setup. Naturally I was suspicious because they didn't say who they were working for and I can't imagine any business in the current market would be willing to offer free internet to anyone. I also didn't want to let three guys into my house, so I dismissed them.

Has anyone heard of this before? Has anyone else form the Edinburgh area had a similar visit recently? I'm naturally concerned about the legitimacy of their service. If anyone could give me any information or advice I would be grateful.

This is a well reported scam of some sort. Can't remember exactly what right now.

I had them come to my door a few months ago saying exactly the same, but my I knew my exchange hadn't been upgraded and had read about this scam previously.

Me being me told them precisely to 'f*** off, off my doorstep and take their ******* scam with them'.

    The three quickly left :)

If you are on VM cable service, then the status of the local exchange is irrelevant anyway-different network. Definitely a scam.

I had a 'Talk Talk' (well,Skye Marketing) salesboy call the other day giving it the old "You know they're upgrading your exchange but don't worry..do you have internet?" to which I told him I was on 6 months free O2 & wasn't interested in in switching as I knew too much about the shoddy service you get from TT,overseas call centers, lack of tech support & them voted the worst provider repeatedly.
Thing is Boffo, these 'salesmen' work on commission only for a marketing company & it's in their interest to get you to sign up or they don't get paid.I was offered a job with the Skye Marketing lot but turned it down after spending a day with a 'sales manager'..Most of them know next to noting about the product they're selling.
  • Thanks for the info guys. I hope none of my neighbours were tricked into letting the guys in.

I've just had two young guys at my door telling me the same thing. I didn't give them a chance to say much, because what they were saying was clearly some sort of scam, but they seemed to be from TalkTalk (carrying TalkTalk branded bag, wearing TalkTalk IDs). I found a thread on another forum (http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1341393) which suggests this is a scam by TalkTalk, getting people to change their provider without even being aware that that's what they're doing. If this is correct, it's absolutely awful.

    1/ Looks dodgy,
    2/ sounds dodgy
3/ 3 blokes want to come inside to check what exactly?

    - reason enough to avoid

4/ It's probably TalkTalk or a company signing up customers on their behalf behind it?

    Hi All,

Talktalk Do have a number of field sales representatives. If operating as a Field Sales rep the agents should always be carrying TalkTalk ID with relevant identification details on it, this should be visible at the times of the visit.

Im not aware however that they have to enter the property, they can complete signup on the doorstep, if LLU is available in the exchange then BB will be free and all the details of the products/tariffs are on the contracts which agents carry with them.

As such if there is any question over the validity of a visist you can ask to check the TT ID the agent is carrying. You have no obligation to let them in in order to sign up and there is no obligation to sign at the door even if you are interested, your more than welcome to initate contact with TalKTalk Sales yourself if you dont wish to sign on the door.

Sales agents should however at no point be giving anything other than accurate information in regards to BB availability.

    Regards

Suggest your "sales" staff need serious retraining then - I had one "gentleman" shout at me thru the letterbox " so you don't want free Broadband then?" - after I had told him that I knew for a fact that our very small exchange had absolutely no unbundled products on offer (and none planned!)-and still hasn't 6 months later.:rotfl:

When one of your reps informed me I could have free broadband, I said OK they then tried to get me to sign up for some of your other products in order to get the free broadband, I told them I was not interested in the other products just the free broadband, they then stated they could not do that.

So in reality there is no such thing as free broadband and you and your company are falsely advertising something that does not exist.
