Home Made Oven Chips

  • I don't bother to parboil. But I do soak the raw chips in plenty of water, rinse and then pat dry on a tea towel. This removes a lot of the starch which can make them go soggy ... sometimes :)

  • I suspect, but I haven't tried, that if you cooked your chips in the oven for a few minutes and then froze them (preferably open freeze on a tray so you can bag them without getting a big lump). You could then take them out and chuck them in a hot oven for 10 minutes or so and they will be fine.

I do this with oven cooked new potatoes etc.

Having the chips in the freezer makes it a lot easier to just bung them on a try rather than having to have potatoes in the house and time to peel/chip them whilst doing 101 other things at the end of a working day.

I might have a go at freezing some...

Definitely parboil, even if only for a few mins. I found they took too long to cook otherwise and didnt taste right. Best of luck

  • I make mine into wedges, season them with s&p and maybe a bit of cajun spice mix or something else, and spray them with fry light (the spray oil). They come out lovely. :)

I never parboil mine anymore. I used to, but I've found they're just as good without, and to be honest they don't take that much longer to cook.

I either make wedges (which are great with salt, pepper and chilli) or use the chipping gadget I got from Lakeland - but I never peel them.

I got a chipper from Lidl but that was a few weeks ago... I am doing slimming world and I cook slimming world chips. I use my chipper which is fab! Then I parboil and then ruff them (shake them about a bit to ruff the surfaces, it makes them crispier) Then I use fry lite and spray it over the chips and bung them in the oven. I give them a shake and another spray half way through cooking and bobs your uncle...free on slimming world!!!

I haven't seen one of those chippers for years, Mags_cat. I had one when the children were small, now I'm a grandma. The only trouble I had with it was that the little bits cut off the outside of the potato cooked too quickly so the dc didn't eat them. Mum did of course, but that's what mums are for, isn't it?

I chunky cut unpeeled potatoes, steam them (quicker and less messy than pan boiling) for a few minutes, put onto a hot oiled oven tray and sprinkle with an oxo cube..the chicken flavoured one is particularly delish :D . They only take 20 mins total, and freeze well at the coated but not oven cooked stage

I was making oven chips a few months ago, and decided halfway through that there wouldn't be enough, so I got OH to pop to the chippy and put the half cooked chips [from fresh, not parboiled] into the freezer.

Then, got them out a few weeks later, popped them back in the tray and they made the most lovely crispy chips. :D

wow I am really going to try this as I am sure it is more cost effective to use the gas cooker than the fryer and also much much healthier.
Thanks for the tips guys, and also about not peeling them, this is the time consuming bit isnt it. I would say cut them in the morning maybe and leave them in water so they are ready to be just bunged in the oven when you get home.
