Why - there is no mention of central heating - just heating?
On the facebook post, it does say "Have you turned your central heating on yet"
I have therefore taken the Guru's advice and answered the poll.
One thing I've noticed on Facebook, you can't edit things once they are posted.

I'm in NEast Scotland and have felt no need yet to put on the heating. Still comfortable using lightweight duvet and lots of layers to go on daytime before heating.

I turned it on a few days ago when, despite wearing two jumpers and two tops, my extremities were painfully cold.

I got cavity wall insulation this summer and have not felt the need to put any heating on yet.

Hoping that when I do put it on (fingers crossed, November) I will get away with only having it on briefly in the morning and evening. We'll see how we go.

  • I live in an old-style tenement building in Scotland and the heating is on for most of the year in the mornings only. I can't stand getting out of a warm shower into a freezing house!

During winter evenings I will only use it ad-hock when necessary, but i'll wrap up warm first and have heating as a last resort! I've had it on a couple of nights already this year.
  • I think it would have been wise to break the poll down into those who have central heating and those who don't.

When I had central heating in the past I wouldn't have dreamed of turning it off ever, I would use the thermostat to ensure that it only came on when necessary to keep the house at an acceptable temperature for the occupants and also to prevent damp etc.

Now I don't have central heating and don't have that kind of control, I have electric heating so it is on or off. So I won't turn it on for one chilly day, in fact I can't as the storage heaters need to charge the night before. So I wait until it is consistently cold, and I feel cold despite putting a warm jumper on. When it gets really cold (snowy conditions) I will suppliment with an electric fan heater for comfort and to prevent freezing.

Its never switched off, however as its controlled by a programmable room thermostat, its only been on for a couple of short periods so far this autumn.

Same as above - CH controlled by programmable room thermostat.

However hot water heating is only by gas - conventional system condensing boiler, so boiler runs all year round on HW timer.

I still think this is cheaper than using an electric imersion heater (especially as we don't have one), and the boiler / pumps run for brief periods each day rather than being totally shut down which may be better for them. - Unless anyone else knows better.

Can't put the heating on yet: 1. saving money (wear a jumper! wear socks! snuggle in a duvet on the sofa!) 2. shortly will be replacing the radiators (as most don't work anyway) for more efficient thermostat ones to go with the new boiler we had replaced a few weeks ago! We were without hot water for a couple of months - boy, do you appreciate it when you get it back! (Though it's amazing how you can put up without it!).
Normally, I follow my late Grandma's advice, 'put a jumper and thick socks on and wear them to bed!'
As the kids are all in school now, I don't have to worry about little ones getting cold in the daytime at home, so when my fingers and nose start feeling cold all the time (and the radiators are in), I'll edge the thermostat up to 16 degrees I think and see how we go.
Does anyone know of any research done on keeping your heating on all year (on low) vs. programme timer switching on and off daily? A friend of ours tried it over two years (Y1 on permanently - Y2 on timer) and he reckoned it was pretty even?
  • I'm in London and our heating isn't on yet - I'm trying to hold out for a few more weeks with wearing extra jumpers and the like as it's still fairly mild down here, but I doubt we'll make it to November before it's turned on.
