Call us weird, but we turn it on to dry our clothes. Is that bad?
Also, we have gas central heating, and we also keep our hot water on all day, believing this to be cheaper. This means that the central heating will always have access to hot water when it needs it. Are we doing it wrong? Has anyone studied this?
I'd be interested to know...

Its never switched off, however as its controlled by a programmable room thermostat, its only been on for a couple of short periods so far this autumn. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

There is no reply box for "I do not have central heating"
I can't, therefore, vote in this poll.0 -
Like Penrhyn, ours is just left on all year on a programmable thermostat - I think it came on for a short burst on Saturday morning but other than that it stays off. Whilst the question is interesting, it can only be a vague indicator as turning the system on is only one factor in spending - how long its on for each day, or what temperature you try to maintain are probably more relevant. It may also be a false economy if a cold house leads to a damp house, damp clothes and health problems.Adventure before Dementia!0

I am in the central belt of Scotland
My heating will go on 'as and when required'
I have already mentioned on another thread that it is not even consistantly cold enough for me to be wearing a jersey regularly yet so the heating is a long way from being switched on.
I learned from my granny, she would say ;are you cold, then put a jersey on, are you still cold, then put another jersey on' the original eponant of multiple layers
I remember her going about her house with her overcoat on rather that have a fire going, of course that was long before central heating became the norm.0 -
No option for 'mine is broken and waiting a plumber to fix it' !!
It would still be off even if it was working, imo not cold enough yet!Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

I have central heating but last year I turned it off, yes off, and just used an electric heater in the living room where I lived for the winter months (I bought a fold down bed). I used to feel sorry for the elderly that were shown on television living in one room to save money but was surprised when I joined their ranks last year (thanks for putting the age of retirement up Mr. Cameron) when I didn't get the winter fuel allowance of £250 that I was warmer last year than previous. It's now £200 and I will, fingers crossed, be getting it this year.0

You do realise that you could heat four rooms using gas CH for around the same amount as it costs you to run one electric heater.
Alternatively you could turn a few radiators off, and save more. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
