Can I simply just switch a pc on and off using the button ?....

.... Well, what I mean is... well exactly that really ! I've a machine upstairs in set up as the main pc which the other pc's around the house are are wirelessly linked to. This machine is not used other that this. I would prefer to not have a clumsy CRT on show, but understand that I need this to shut the machine down 'properly'. If I ditched the monitor would it harm the pc if I just switched it on and off using the front button each time instead ?

I know there is the option of moving the main NTL connection to another site or indeed buying a LCD monitor but I'm just after a 'quick fix' in the meantime.

Thanks for your help :)

You may find that switching off via the on/off button causes errors in some of your software. Using the shutdown process unsures that all running programs are shutdown correctly. I would imagine using it regularly to shutdown could possibly cause serious errors.

I only use the on/off switch to shutdown in emergencies.

You could set up netmeeting so that you can access the main pc remotely from another machine on your network. Then you can shut it down cleanly.

click start, run, then enter conf - that will bring up netmeeting and you can set it up.

You will need to configure netmeeting on both machines BTW and leave it running on the main PC and set to automatically accept incoming calls. You will need to tick remote desktop sharing on the main PC as well.
