we stood up on buses(if they was busy) never did us any harm
i take it you never did any motorway travelling whilst standing up ?
just to make it clear - the students travelling on the bus are 16+ so sitting 3 to a seat might be fine ifyou're 5-6 yrs old but when you're 16 -20 years it's not an option0 -
Is this a public route or a designated school bus? If the latter then the LEA probably have an obligation to provide a service for the number of passes they have issued.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. it's a designated school bus
Then I would have thought the school transport department of the LEA has an obligation to ensure that sufficient provision is made to transport all those needing it to the school. Phone the school transport people in your LEA and let them know that there are no seats left by the time the bus leaves your village.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Complaining about not having any seats available probably won't get anywhere.
As already mentioned, many busses are certified to carry a number of standing passengers and provided that this number isn't being exceeded then the bus driver is acting legally.
It would probably be far better to concentrate on the safety aspect by reinforcing the point that in the event of a 50 or 60mph accident on the motorway, the people who are standing would without a doubt injur both themselves and other people who may be sitting.
Even without an accident happening, I doubt very much if many people could stay upright if the bus had to brake or swerve at 50mph.0 -
it's a designated school bus
Not quite sure what you mean by "designated school bus".
If the bus is school transport provided by the bus operator under contract to Council/LEA/College and is wholly for the use of the Students going to a particular school/college, it almost certainly should not be carrying standing passengers. It may also be required to be fully seat belted.
If however, the bus shows a route number, is technically available to anyone to travel with on payment of a fare and operates to a public timetable, it is almost certainly a "registered" local bus service and able to carry standees up to the vehicle's licensed limits. It may also be that this operation is wholly or part subsidised by Council/LEA/College.
As others have alluded to, beware of creating the situation where more stringent criteria have to be applied to who is carried, in order to reduce the number on the vehicle to the seating capacity only.
Councils have limited funds, they can and often do, simply apply more stringent criteria to who qualifies for free or subsidised school transportation rather than exceed their budgets.0
