I threw them out, after I discovered what they had done. I've had three surveys (one brief, two full) which confirm that all of the tiling had to be removed because they (probably) did not wait long enough for plaster to dry, did not prime the wall, and used the wrong cement. The tiling looks like scheisse, and the bath is the wrong way round so you could not stand beneath the shower.

Also he pursuaded me to let him grout edges rather than use edging strip as he said it goes yellow. It doesn't. There were some sharp edges of cut tiles around the window edge, which was a safety hazard. And the tiles at the top of the ceiling almost fell off. Another safety hazard. In some cases very little of the adhesive, ~20%, was in contact with the wall. Combined with no primer, possibly damp plaster, it was a mess.

He did not have family issues at the time, i.e. almost 3 months ago.

They have not admitted one single fault. Unfortunately there are two of them, and they will back each other up and contradict my claims e.g. that I asked them to reverse the bath. It does make me wonder why the two of them work together. Being able to back each other up in a fight with a customer would be useful if they were in the habit of not doing what a customer asked, and were both willing to lie.

The CheckATrade review has gone live, and I gave them 1 out of 10 for workmanship. Unfortunately it looks like CheckATrade are in chocolate teapot territory in terms of usefulness, so legal action is underway.

The owner of CheckATrade was saying on another forum that 99.5% of his members are honest decent people who strive to do their best for customers. He also claimed that CAT kick out members who do not reach the required standards. The fact that these monkeys are still on CAT tells me all I need to know about CAT.

They have posted a response. They state that they cannot comment on the tiling because they were "not allowed to verify". Amazing. At no time did they request to examine the tiling, and at no time did I get a request from a third party. I did say I would allow anyone of their choosing to examine the bathroom, but it would have to be outside of my working hours as I did not have enough holiday left. Draw your own conclusions. I have asked CAT to withdraw those remarks from their response. There are other inaccuracies too. It looks as if the trades can say whatever they like in the response, and it is not checked for factual accuracy, so the trades can make it look as if they have done no wrong!
