Also only 3 holes on back of tv-red, yellow/white.
I'm looking at page 9 of the manual and it shows two sets of 5-pin inputs on the back (two of the 5 pins are audio). Have I got the wrong TV?(42 SL738)? Anyhow, that's my basis for recommending the component cables.

Yes, this is frustrating. Thought this would be simple to solve to be honest :(

Just been back through posts, you didnt give the results of plugging direct into the red/white/yellow inputs on the side of the TV. That should be AV3 on the TV input menu (if it is a 42sl738)

Scrilla, If that is the right TV then yep, the 5 on the back are component inputs. Page 56 has the input specs, and they confirm the SCART is fully pinned on the TV. That pretty much confirms it's the current cable at that's at fault, or the adapter blocking the override signal. Component cables £2.65, RGB SCART £3.87 on amazon. To be honest, be glad you have to upgrade, composite video on a 42" HDTV is of shockingly bad quality, every imperfection that low res CRT would have smudged over is crystal clear on a modern screen, and composite was always the worst quality option on CRTs (except RF aeriel... shudder!). Scrilla is right, for a 42 HDTV go component even if you do get the old one to work. You won't be upset by the huge video quality upgrade.

Hi! Sorry for late reply. MUCH MUCH appreciated-will have a scout around amazon (I have a £15 free voucher (!) )-any particular type/make of cable you guys would recomend (a link would be great!)?

TV being swapped tomorrow for exact same model as well as occaisionally HDM1 signal drops & you have to 're-press' for the HDMI socket.

Thanks again for all your help!

I may well soon get an xbox 360 as i gather the 1st generation ones (without loads of memory-I'm not interested in on line gaming etc) are pretty cheap now 2nd hand..

    Thanks again!
