Update...called Toshibas very helpfull helpline...thry talked me through all options, checked scarts etc & concluded it must be the leads. Said it was nothing to do with resolution...etc...tried resetting on PS2 menu on old CRT TV upstairs...works fine! Reset to the 'r y g' (think thats what they call it!) that scrilla suggested...tried it via scart & composite & STILL no image. Completely perplexed....any more for any more???0

I would try the component cable method then (buying the cable from amazon or somewhere you trust) and go from there. The new cable fits into the component input sockets at the back of your TV labelled 4 or 5. You should see 5 inputs, hence the 5 cables to go into them. Then change your PS2 settings on your CRT TV to Y/Pb/Pr (from RGB), then connect up to your new TV. You get a better picture with this setup anyhow. It's the setup I have on my PS2.
It's a strange one indeed why it won't work with your cables. I'd suggest maybe to not buy the new cable just yet though, as some more knowledgable members here may have another solution avoiding the (smallish) cost of the new cable.0 -
A lot of new TVs won't give the option to switch to an input unless they detect an active signal going into them. Does sound like a new cable may be required, either component or an integrated RGB SCART. RGB cables send "hello" (very technical sorry) signals down themselves that announce themselves to the TV. Component should give you a slightly better picture on the HDTV than SCART. The SCART will give a better picture on the CRT.
And just a quick check, the SCART adapter your composite cables go into doesn't have an input/output switch on it does it?0 -
SCRILLA...cheers! However I only have THREE pins-yellow/red/white-any ideas where I could get one of those? Also only 3 holes on back of tv-red, yellow/white. Can't find anywhere on set up the 'scart' setting to assign scart. Tosh guy said it should make no difference-if I turn on device it should be picked up & display straight away! Already changed to y/pb/pr & widescreen. We'll see what the cable does! Maybe its to do with the 100hz or the progressive nature of full HD??0

Galmone-yes it does. Tried it both ways-no joy.0

Your current cable set up will not send the override signal to auto display as the Toshiba rep suggests. The adapter will not transfer that signal across as only 3 of the 21 pins will be active. Only a fully integrated cable will have the proper SCART pin active to do that. In fact I'm not sure a composite only SCART cable can at all, in many years of UK and import console buying I've never come across one.
The TV should have no problems displaying a PS2, its output is essentially the same as any UK non HD equipment.0 -
Do you have any other SCART equipment you can use to check on the TV? Bog standard DVD? Freeview box? If they work do they have RGB/composite options in their menus you can toggle to check?0

Galm1...the current sockets work fine on my old CRT tv. Yes-other stuff like DVD player 100% fine. Will check DVD menu but worked straight away-as soon as plugged in! Frustrating orwhat...
How can only 3 pins work when the red/yellow/white pins are plugged into back of scart? Surely then all 21 SCART pins will work?0 -

SCART is multi input/output capable of carrying composite, RGB, S-Video and audio. Each pin has one of these functions, in your case only the 3 pins for composite video (yellow) and the two audio are in use. The others are redundant. In fact if you open that adapter up only 6 pins will be cabled up, the inputs and outputs.
In any case if the TV is picking up the DVD and the PS2 works on another TV then the problem is the cable. For convenience with your other TV I would get an integrated SCART lead with no adapter, should be relatively cheap from amazon. RGB would be your best bet. That type of cable works on my Samsung so should be no reason not to on a Toshiba.
Good luck!0 -
WOW money saving fourms are awsome i'm getting great information plus on to this one your scart lead may be unable to connect to HD options:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)0
