Ok, lets close the industry in Britain down because of it's immoral nature. Transfer it all away to Frankfurt/New York etc and you may possibly lose your job or end up paying more tax because of it.reduceditem wrote:sheraz; #90. In reference to my talk about the direction of my moral compass (I still hate that phrase!) you say....''Well I'm glad mine doesn't because these companies are worth 17% of the UK's GDP. They are wealth generators for the UK.''
Would you like that?
What exactly do you think is immoral? The fact that they take prophit making seriously? Don't we all? In our little microcosm, we all do.
Or do you goto work in the morning because your are selfless and want to make the world a better place? The fact is, they are paid more because there are less employees taking a piece of the pie.
What exactly are yu so against.?God made man, man made money, money made man mad0 -
I like debating with you, reduceditem

I'm normally the one arguing for morality but in this thread I was confining myself to talking pretty much exclusively about finance. I do agree with a lot of what you say; I would say that morality and goodwill are vital as human characteristics, but the financial industry is the 'backbone' in the sense that they are integral to the economic infrastructure - after all, Phil's initial intention with this thread was to explore the connection between salaries and contribution to society. We may be trying to compare apples and oranges here.
It's not as clearcut as saying finance = immoral, charity work = moral. The impetus from a personal perspective should be to embody those qualities, no matter which sector one works in. It follows on from the idea that money is a neutral force, and it is the way in which it is used which lends it a moral 'flavour.' I'm speaking here from a Christian perspective; I don't know your religious views, but I suspect on the subject of the 'morality of money' we pretty much agree.
My comment about the City not employing stupid people was tongue-in-cheek, I have to confess. What is stupidity? I've know people whose minds dazzle me but have precious little common-sense; I've also known people blessed with both intellectual and 'life skills.' My comments are based on many many years in the City but I would be the first to admit I haven't seen it all. I've steered clear of those companies with a 'hard' reputation as employers, because there's no point putting myself in a working environment in which I would feel very uncomfortable. I favour the smaller companies as employers - no Goldman Sachs or JPMorgan for me.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0 -
phil firstly i think its none of your business
secondly you are NEVER going to venture to the city, jjjeeezzzuuusss you are never going to leave your mums side. why start such a pointless thread, which other posters have highlighted you havent the foggiest about, and try and debate it. phil you think a hickey is stressful, you will never come close to feeling stress like city workers do. i openly admit i havent a clue what their job entails, but like brazilianwax says, i am aware these guys have heart attacks early and live stressful careers. !!!!!! does that matter to you??:TThe places i have been so far: Palma, Tunis, Rome, Corsica, St.Raphael, Naples, Pompeii, Barcelona, Villefranche, Ajaccio, Livorno, Genoa, Madiera, Martinique, St Maartens, St Kitts, St Vincents, Dominica, Barbados, Antigua, Tortola, Jealous anyone????? :T0 -
I wonder if the anxiety of many posters to point up an 'immaturity' of phil's isn't an anxiety to push away their former selves, of perhaps not so many years ago?
'Maturity' is an immature idea.
Maturing often means stopping asking certain questions - only the immature and philosophers ask them. Well then, that shows we need our immaturities.
The market you say?
Maybe, but maybe phil is asking a question about the 'worth' of a person or of a person's work, now maybe the 'the market valuation' is begging that question - it is a very widespread feeling that the two things are not identical.
Philosophy is a very useful subject phil as I keep on telling you, you should not denigrate or renounce it - see how ahead of everybody you are?
How is it going BTW?Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.0 -
phill, you're as daft as they come.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I'm more concerned about how much of my tax £ is being spent on supposedly educating young Phil?Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

Who knows if I could do a City job, I would never want one and I doubt if I would even get an interview. But there really is no need to be so personal about me.:beer:0 -

Marginal social benefit and costs are really economic terms, but Philosophy did help create them.
It is going fine thanks Ted.:beer:0 -
