It is nice that you can be so insulting. I have no idea if I would be upto a City job or not so I am certain you can not make those judgements about me.:beer:0 -
It's also curious that someone who feels qualified to call someone else an idiot can't spell correctly.studentphil wrote:It is nice that you can be so insulting. These people are so 1D as all they think about is themselves, their firm, and profits. They do not really care if the deals kill the environment or make people in China who work in awful standards.
Profit but at what price?:beer:0 -

I know two people who work in this area in London. Neither is in a top position but both earn vast amounts compared to the average. And they are both tw*ts. If they were not boyfriend/husbands of close friends we'd have nothing to do with them.
No-one I know likes them, (except that when they arrive they've always got something expensive as a present). They have no redeeming qualities that I can think of, and as reduceditem says, their sole goal in life is to make/produce money/profit. I always find it difficult to deal with them, as they're so immoral - they have not the slightest compunction about treading on anyone (even their OH's). They make Gordon Gekko look tame.
The stories they tell are always about deals or effects of deals, or how they've just sh*t on another worker - colleague or opponent. These people would let you die for a profit - seriously.
If these are not the top of the tree, imagine what the ones at the top are like, and what they'd do for a profit.
I am surrounded by these types all day, I plan on quitting in 2yrs, and I also plan on slapping a few round the face with a wet fish when I do.....Saving for an early retirement!0 -
quidsinquentin wrote:Not sure I agree with the analysis. Reduceditems point (I think) is that what they do has no value to society at all - possibly the reverse. These people do not work to produce anything except money. They do not produce a service to society or to fulfill a need, except greed.
Absolutely, I saw the point. What I'm trying to say is that big finance companies do service a need because without them our economic system wouldn't exist. Now you can do one of two things:
- change our economic system such that it doesn't revolve around capitalist principles or;
- try to regulate or otherwise modify the existing economy.
Since the former is to say the least unrealistic, the latter is the only way to make an 'immoral' industry 'moral'.
Saying "I hate traders, they make too much money and they should all be made to work for £20,000 a year" may be good for the soul, but isn't going to change anything.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

Please let me know and I'll send the fish - preferably a heavily scaled one or a squid.Imelda wrote:I am surrounded by these types all day, I plan on quitting in 2yrs, and I also plan on slapping a few round the face with a wet fish when I do.....The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.0 -

So OK, recently I worked on a deal whereby some city investors bought some equity in a renewable energy project. The money they injected allowed my company to develop MORE such projects. They have recently sold this equity and have made a tidy profit.
Their motive may have been profit, but was it immoral?Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

What on earth has morality got to do with it? And if it has then surely getting the best deal for yourself is morally acceptable?
We all have a free choice as to how to spend our lives. I could train to be a nurse if I wanted. The thing is, pretty much anyone else could either. Being a doctor is different, I couldn't do that. I couldn't be a footballer either.
Those with the talent however can ask for the going market rate. The more unique the talent or ability, the more scarce it is, the more money you can command for it. Fair trade is no robbery.
None of you have a problem selling an item for as much as you can get off ebay, why have a problem with someone selling their labour for as much as they can get?
As for charity workers, do you rally think 100k a year charity workers is going to encourage people to donate to charity? People donate to the cause and expect the admin charges for the charity to be low and in all honesty expect the charity workers to be actually doing it for nothing.I wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It's the good girls men should be warned against.-David Niven0
