£320 for four? That was a steal.

I chose them as the safe option. They were recomended my car manufacturer and hopefully avoiding any potential problems with insurance.

I appreciate it is a bit early to comment, but how do you rate them?

Believe it or not, the average temp for last winter was only -1.

I gather winter tyres are not even useful until at -7 or the like.

And how often do we have severe weather like last year anyway?

3 times in the last 50?

I had mid range tyres fitted during the whole of last winter and I got about without a hitch, even on icy roads, one has to adjust their driving to conditions.

If winter tyres were that useful then they would be mandatory, however, we live in the UK, not Lapland.

    Load of cobblers.

I agree with your final sentence as it sums up the rest of your post well

Plenty of info on this site as well as more specialist car sites for understanding how winter M&S tyres really affect a car

I stopped reading after your comment about not working until below -7....... :)

I guess it's a good thing that here they tend to only plough one lane of the dual carriageways so the crashed and abandoned cars tend not to be in the unploughed lane and if you have a suitably equipped car you get a lane to yourself. Normally you need a BMW badge for that!

Fit your BMW with winters and you get that lane back to yourself thankfully..... ;)

Tyre giant wanted £360 for the same tyres, I used to have the unit next door to our local tyre man so mates rates.
Early days but very little tyre noise so far I like them, my summer tyres are Avon ZV5 v rated tyres.

winter tyres aren't just for snowy or icy conditions - the compounds are designed to work better than summer tyres when temperatures are consitently below the 8 degree mark - up here in Scotland that covers a fair stretch of winter months, so if anyone likes to feel safer then fitting winter tyres is a good idea.

It happens every year in most of Northern Europe, no-one bats an eyelid, it's just something that goes with owning a car over there, swopping tyres over for colder seasons.

Two are more dangerous than non, it's four or nothing, just look at some of tyre tests on Youtube. Four identical tyres react the same, mix and match winter with summer or all season and you can turn a car into spinning top.

I paid £65 for my Nokians last year.
£40 each for the vredesteins on the front of my wifes this year, and a set of steel wheels for less than a fiver each off ebay.

    That's the million dollar question.
I ran two on the front last year, on a front wheel drive car with no problems, and intend to do the same this year.
Some people would say use four, or use none, but I never lost the back once, and steering and stopping was actually possible with the winter tyres.
  • Had a wee look at winter tyres, but as I've never had a problem getting where I want to go in all weathers and they cost about the same as I pay for my cars, I dont think I'll bother.
Drive to the conditions and you'll be fine. The biggest problem is and always will be other people.
