hi all
Please be gentle with me - i know nothing about cars - but i do live in the Peak District in a back lane, that is almost vertical down to the main road - so we are thinking about Winter tyres this year.
How do i find out what is the best tyres for my car?
Do people buy just winter tyres or do they get a spare set of wheels with the tyres on?
My car is a Nissan Almera (dont laugh - my uncle gave it to me!)
Please can you advise in non technical speak:o

Hi Art,
You don't have to have winter tyres, just as you don't have to have a pair of winter boots. Most of us can get by with all season tyres and shoes .
I would suggest you get wheels and tyres, unless you want to change back next spring?
For an Almera I would buy the cheapest tyres I can find. I would advise you to make up your mind soon, or you might find winter tyres are in short supply. Speak to your local tyre dealer and/or online supplier - google winter tyres.

The good thing with Nissan is they only really use two types of wheel fittings.
Do your wheels have 4 wheel nuts or 5? What size are they? 15 inch?0 -
Almera is 4x100 PCD with a centre bore of 59.0. Offset between 35 & 42. From http://www.carlsalter.com/wheel_fitments.html
Nice common wheel size. If you've got the space find a set of 15 inch steel wheels and some 195/50/15 winter tyres which seems to be one of the cheapest tyre sizes. :cool:0 -

i know i don't have to have them - but as we have had a least a few weeks snow here every year for the past 10 years, i think it would be sensible to have them...
winter boots are essential here - i work on a farm - we are at 850 feet above sea level - so it gets a bit cold:D, it was minus 19 degress last year for quite a while...although the snow was over a metre deep so i doubt winter tyres would have helped much - at least not until the tractor cleared a path..
thanks for all the info i will look into it.. we get cut off here - and we stock up to prepare for it -but sometimes you do have to travel in the back lanes so i would like to feel more secure..

can you recommend a good website to look up how much this might cost?

Don't bother, we don't get the severe weather to justify them.
Better off with a tyre that is good in the rain.
have you actually read any of this thread, winter tyres arent just for snow they are for where temps fall below 7 degrees. Autoexpress ran an article just last week that there are so many people who dont understand what winter tyres are and that they should be called cold weather tyres. if you see how many car lengths it takes a car to stop on normal tyres at 30 mph against winter tyres and the fact that when winter tyres stop the normal ones are still doing 20mph, and if it is cold or snows where you are and you can afford it you would buy winter tyres.0 -
