Preparing for winter III

  • I'm not doing as much stocking up as those in rural areas as even with heavy (for us) snow, we didn't get snowed in last year so supplies thankfully weren't an issue. But we do live in a Victorian terrace with original (drafty, single glazed) windows. It's a rental so can't do anything permanent, but doing what we can.

    So far...
    • Put glazing film over the windows
    • Purchased cheap fleece to line curtains
    • Ordered new winter coat (old one now beyond mending)
    • Washed flannelette sheets ready to switch over the bed
    • Moved second sofa into office. Spend evenings in there with DH, as it's much smaller so easier to heat than our large lounge
    • Small stock of cheap, easy to heat foods (e.g. soup, tinned spaghetti) which we love in winter anyway
    • Been telling DH how it's proven to be more effective to heat him with clothes than warm air (I did read that somewhere) :p

    Still need to...
    • Check candle supply, purchase more if necessary
    • Make a keyhole cover - magnets don't work on our plates
    • Restock loo roll (down to 6 rolls) cleaning supplies, etc
    • Make/buy draft excluder for front (only external) door
    • Buy some cheap leggings and thick socks to act as thermals

    Considering...
    • Moving telly into study or bedroom, for same reason as the sofa
    • Buying a stove top kettle for DH's tea in case of power cuts
    • Snow boots or yaktrax - already have weatherproof hiking shoes which were fine last winter except for the iciest days
    • Curtains for the kitchen - concerned as window is next to the boiler, don't want to create a fire hazard. Already have a thermal blind up but it's still chilly.

Incidentally, with the exception of elderberries, the berry crop is scanty this year. We won't be making rosehip wine this year, I felt too guilty to pick them :( Perhaps we are due a mild winter in this part of the country.

What is your recipe for rosehip wine? We have a rose in our front garden that always has masses of rosehips (last year I harvested 5kg) that I use to make rosehip jelly. Wine would be a useful alternative because I think I have enough jelly to last until 2020!

    TIA.

Empty jars are great too especially as you will get the light through the glass!

that's what i use for tall candles, i stick 3 or 4 in a jar (however much it will hold) when you put in as many as you can squeeze in it keeps them fairly upright but i put a small plate beneath them in case they drip

i used to have tons of candle holders but they all made such a mess i just find this easier

I can remember in Girl guides, learning to cook little pancakes over an upturned (empty and punctured) golden syrup tin - tealight on a saucer, punctured tin over the top and using the greased lid as a cooking pan! I am guessing something like that would give out a fair amount of heat as well!

Have put up lined curtains in the front room bay window (already double glazed, but faces North so gets cold early in the day.) I used 3 pairs of 54" drop, as this tucks nicely in behind the radiator and helps restrict drafts.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Singlestep - what are you like - as they sy hereabouts! Seriously tho' be flippn' careful please ... listen to your Aunty Tug!!

:embarasse I know. I need to engage brain cells at all times.

Nursey, thanks for the tips (and the earlier reminder). I'm afraid I'm the only minion in sight, mostly, and I have to call upon the services of my uncle from time to time. Maybe I can start bribing my godson once he's a bit older!

I've been trying hard to take on board advice from the thread and the site and this was the first full pay period in which I'd been more careful throughout. I got a bit of a fright at the cash point this evening when I saw much less money than I had expected until I remembered having paid thge unexpected bill for the leak in my building! Still, my resolve to reform has meant I have the same cushion I'd normally have three days before I get paid. I've got a long way to go before I can think about having enough for my long-term goals. It feels really good to have started, though :o

I'm putting my scarves and gloves through the wash this evening. This is the time of year when I start wearing headscarves/caps when at home. It really makes a difference for me and my mum, whose hair is thinner than it used to be, has followed suit.
