I'm allergic to lavender too. My parents bought me a Piglet heat bag thing a few Christmases ago, which I now unfortunately can't find :( Apparently they searched for ages and ages to find one that was unscented.
  • Moved the lounge furniture into it's winter position today (hate it  as have to have the sofa practically in the middle of the room as the only radiator is on the wall behind it).

The door is also next to it and the opening is at the side where the radiator is, so lose a lot of heat through it .

I did try a different configuration (as I seem to do every year :o) but it doesn't work ..... queue a couple of hours wasted & 3 very unhappy pets (they hate change) - but I did get to hoover in places that don't see the hoover often :o

Not a great weekend for us with a poorly labrador but suffice to say we did alittle bit of winter prep.

I got one of the horses rain rugs washed and dried today that will need to go on him tomorrow morning before the rain starts.

We wound the hose up today back on it's potable reel and covered that over with a black bin liner to keep it clean from debris. It is 'parked up' outside the shed at the moment so when the lawns have the last cut, we can pop the hose inside the shed. We had a sweep up and then switched off the outside tap, drained it and then put it's padded cover round it. Thats it for us so far.

Forecast for the Midlands is pretty much rain all week and torrential rain for tomorrow and Monday.

Yes I've seem wind and rain is working its way towards us. Going to have a nosy round the garden tomorrow and see if anything could get blown over. Actually feels warmer out there tonight. Warmer than 12hours ago, anyway...

  • Hi all,

Been looking in on here but it's easy to get left behind if you miss a few days. Hope everything's going well. Does anyone on here know how to crochet? Got a few questions I need to ask.

Seem to have got the list down a bit already, really pleased with my curtains, I got them from a little independent (I think) shop in Harlow. They're proper thermal ones, £32 for the pair which we can't really afford, but psychologically at least, it feels warmer, not to mention more private!

Feels really chilly here tonight, though it was beautiful during the day. Heating is firmly off - needs to get a lot colder before it goes on. Dressing gown and cup of tea is doing a good job!

    General
    • [STRIKE]Buy curtains for front & back doors[/STRIKE]
    • Book boiler service
    • [STRIKE]Fix light in bathroom[/STRIKE]
    • Continue learning to crochet - keeps me entertained during those dark evenings!
    • [STRIKE]Wash stable coat / gilet[/STRIKE]
    • Organise a winter box for the car (there's a good chance I'll get stuck at some point as the horses are in the middle of no-where, and no 4x4)
    • Get spark plugs replaced
    • Clean and polish car
    • Cover garden furniture (end of Oct)
    • Replace floor of shed
    • Cut back fruit bushes (end of Oct)
    • Get job!

    Horses
    • Order hay
    • Send rugs to be washed
    • Buy those little sachets of UHT milk to put in tea at stables (definitely required to stop me freezing!)
  • Got an overcoat for journey to and from work. Nothing I had would go over my suit or is waterproof with a hood and dark in colour. Its getting too cold now just to wear my suit and no jacket.

Planning on putting bubble wrap over the downstairs toilet window, try and keep some heat in.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J
  • I saw people in shorts and bikinis today! I was at the beach, but blimey as warm as it was today it is cold tonight. I've got my hot water bottle out for tonight.

I've got my kitten loving her pyramid bed (cost twice as to what it would in BM stores but never mind LOL, that'll teach me to recommend before I buy one myself :rotfl:). The other cats are just huddling together so they're ok.

I read that there isnt going to be an Autumn as such, it'll just go straight into winter weather... so prep on! x

Have just started reading this thread & you have all really inspired me to get sorted for winter! I now need to spend a bit of time reading back over the thread to pick up more tips.
The main thing i want to get is a door curtain for the back door. Can i ask where you bought yours??? Most of the ones i have seen are plain & i would really like a patterned one, any suggestions gratefully received!
    Thanks!

All my curtains came from charity shops, freecycle, or my mum rescued them out of piles of stuff donated to one of her neighbours who ran regular jumble sales for some animal charity. Often you can find just one curtain, I did, but it's not really a problem getting a pair, you either have one spare, or hang both curtains back to back for double the insulation, or find another door, or give one away on freecycle to somebody else looking just for one.

Funny really, I never expected to get to my mid-50s without EVER having had brand new curtains anywhere.
