Oh one thing I do need is salt for the path, anyone seen it at a good price?

My local recycling centre have bags for people to take (one per person) Don't know if its just my area or if all recycling centres do it.

Bought the LO some vests to keep him toasty. Sorted through his clothes and bought another pair of jeans for him. So he has plenty of long sleeved tops and trousers now. Will buy him a snowsuit too.

His snow boots from last year still fit so he's mostly sorted. Will buy him a new hat, scarf and gloves soon.

I'm going 'college' clothes shopping on the 18th so will buy some warm wardrobe staples then.

More Tesco vouchers in today so will use these to buy some tinned food :)

These are links to heated throws for the couch......but dearer than electric blankets but I would guess that is because they should be safer, wires not so easy to break

I love the idea of window quilts and will be looking for some suitable fabric in the charity shops. We have quite a few single glazed windows on the North side of the house and although the stick on plastic glazing made a difference window quilts could be a very useful addition.

Today DH transported all the wood for the Winter to our house and all he needs to do is cut it and chop it.:eek:

We are planning to manage with just a wood burner which will hopefully heat some radiators as well as giving us hot water. Only problem is that the house is ancient.

Thanks for the heads up on that, picked up mine (well hubby did) today and had a go, works really well.....I now have two wet bricks sitting in greenhouse to dry but plan to do more, but once dry will have to store them somewhere where mice cannot get them as field mice move into my garden every winter( they do try and get into the house as well)

    Mornin Preppers!
Had my chimney swept this morning so that's another major TICK on my list! Am de-cluttering the house at the moment so there WILL be room to move the furniture away from the radiators AND I now know exactly where all the thermals, fleeces and electric blankets are. I also now know exactly what I have in my freezer, fridge and food cupboards! All this done by the 7th August :D.

I still have lots to do but am already feeling much better prepared than I have over the last 2 years... thankyou everyone on here for all the tips, keep them coming!

Hi, I do have an online account. I'm not fabulous at updating my meter readings but they are done every month or so. Ironically the account is only £12 in debit. Moving in Winter now seems like a bad idea, took so long to set up the new account so the overpaid money was refunded (even though I asked for it not to be) and when the DD started again it never built up a credit again :(

    Hiya nikki2804,

I'm sorry about the delay in getting back to you on this :o

    I see now.

Meter readings about once a month is fine, you can also produce a real time bill when you enter them if you want to.

The account should now start to be in credit and I understand it would have been if that money had not been refunded.

So, what we need to do is get the Direct Debit set to the right amount for the coming months and make sure the account is billed up to date.

Have you also checked you're on the best tariff for your needs? You can have a look at prices via your online account.

But as I say if you need me to help, just email it's no probs at all :D

    Helena :)

  • Got a couple of packs of window insulation kits (plastic coverings) from ebay. Am also in the process of comparing fuel providers to see if there is a cheaper deal out there for us. Bought a new back door threshold as ours is rusty and loose. I have put it on the list of OH's jobs to do when he can. Looking into ways I can put up thermal door curtains. Tried velcro last year but this was a failure as the fabric was too heavy and the velcro kept coming unstuck.
    To do list:
buy a new hot water bottle
New coat and jumpers also needed
Need new warm work shoes as my boots gave up the ghost in the spring.

When it is very cold, the water in my kitchen and bathroom plug holes freeze up (joys of them being in a draughty flat roof extension) need some sort of lagging to prevent this from happening!

I have done some winter preparation today when I booked for our chimney to get swept on Thursday. £45 may not be the cheapest but at least I managed to find someone who could come when my OH is at home. This way I don't have to take any time off work and loose money since I only get paid when I am working.

   £45 To get chimney swept:eek:

We bought a set of chimney brushes and use an old sheet to protect any fallout. Job done and it's not difficult to do, well not for me cos hubby does it.

Please could you help me, are there any companies offering free cavity wall insulation at the moment? I would like to get started with preparing for this winter, I really feel the cold and not too mobile so have sit down a lot between jobs.

    Thank you.

Hello, I have yet to catch up so apologies if it has been discussed but I don't suppose anyone has actually paid for the exacta weather forecast for the winter or if anyone has signed up to any other weather place that wants to share a "rough idea" of what to expect this year? Last year the predictions pretty much all turned out to be wrong but i am so curious to know!!!

I have almost finished my winter prep now, I have done everything except stock up the store cupboard
Everything is always better after a cup of tea
