 Oh no - was it a heavy duty outside bin or an inside one? Maybe it's not such a great idea then:(

Will have a shuffle in the wee room tomorrow and see if I can squeeze it in - if not, I'll have to take my chances with the bin.....

Proper plastic dustbin (our old one from when we went to wheelie bins) stored in the shed. Was safe for the first two winters but last year as it was so bad we even had the mouse nesting in the shed. We had to throw away chicken feed, corn and even chicken grit that they'd eaten/pooed in. Luckily I managed to find metal dustbins at a local hardmongers shop for £15ish. Think Ikea do some as well but they're miles away for us. Can't remember if you're near one.

I keep my chicken feed in a plastic dustbin in the shed and although we have lots of mice and a few rats around the fields, the bin is un-nibbled.
  • Thanks - There's an Ikea in town but around a 60 mile round trip.

I do go now & then as there's also a PAH, HB etc in the same retail park - I'll pop in next time I'm up (if I can ever drive again - def got "stuck in the house fever" this week).

I caved and put the heating on. I've been shivering at work all day. I don't think I'd get away with going around with a fleecy blanket, unfortunately! Maybe a hot water bottle ... In a couple of weeks from now the heating will be on and we'll all be complaining about the heat - it's either feast or faminine in our workplace!

The wind was blowing a draught through the window beside my desk all day at work and the whole room was freezing, even with it full of people all day. The whole floor in our part of the building was the same and we spent part of lunchbreak watching the rain seemingly fall in sheets being blown across the town.
  • Tootifrooti - once your chimney has been swept please consider getting a chimney balloon, they really do stop heat disappearing up the chimney and can make the room nice and cosy. But can be removed for fires when needed.

    http://www.chimney-balloon.co.uk/ or similar!

We bought two for our downstairs fireplaces and they have made a big difference to the background heat levels- and no more draughts!

    Moam
Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.

Snowball says too far away, working hard to bring it forward.

Oh I hate that single - you dress 'for work' and then freeze so that when you get home you are exhausted with it and just have to have some heat. At school I have a classroom in an outside block built in the 30s or possibly after the war so its difficult to heat and we all have to go outside to get to the main block for the loo so you are bound to get cold (and wet sometimes)- personally I think its unacceptable not to have loos that you dont have to go outside for - I mean its LIKE old fahioned outside loos!!!!
I still havent got the hang of dressing appropriately - more fleeces as years go by I suspect...

I'm so glad that I don't have to do that any more! I also work in a school and I knew it was bad today and I wasn't coming down with something as even the ones arriving hot and sweaty from PE (usually begging for window and door to be opened) sat with blazers on! I'd not get away with wearing a fleece, unfortunately. When it's below freezing, I go to work in jeans and thermals, as public transport becomes unreliable, and hope there's time to get changed before the day begins.

I woke up a few times last night. I'm not sure whether or not it was rain, wind and hail or just that I was cold. Maybe it's time to put the flannels on.

    Hey preppers :)

Question please... I don't have a grate yet so I am wondering what I can use instead... Any ideas? I do have a pound shop disposable bbq which I could use and pop a log on top of it.... :rotfl: What do you think? Would that work? I don't need a big fire - I just want to have one :D

I really am too impatient to wait until the building works are finished :o

do you have roasting rack you don't mind getting charred? i have one that is v shaped and holds my meat off the bottom of the tray i set it in, i can see this working as a temp grate

or you could go outside and collect some large stones perhaps?

it may be safer to wait, don't know i've never done a fire without a grate

Proud to announce that I have a little fire burning tonight :j

I bought one of those fire logs from MrS and cut it in half :rotfl:

I can't do a proper one as there are still copper pipes and the heat could travel up them to under the floorboards upstairs  so won't be able to have a decent fire going until they are sawn and fire cemented in... hopefully early next week.

So cosy sitting watching the flames flicker even if it is only tiny and on one side of the fireplace :rotfl:

ETA - Fire has been going for about half hour, I have checked the pipes and they are still very cool so I have gone crazy and put the other half of the log on :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
