Preparing for winter III

Have checked out all those useful links that have been posted re the weather. I'm wondering what is the best outdoor clothing to wear. Still no car so I have to walk to shops and my difficulty is getting clothing which is warm and waterproof and yet isn't stifling hot in shops. I have always found this to be a problem in winter - anyone any ideas?Treat the Earth well,It was not given to you by your parents,It was loaned to you by your children.Masai proverb0

Does anyone know of a reliable gas flame lighter for fire lighting? The last two I bought were pretty useless and only lasted a few weeks. Matches seem to walk in this house.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

I actually had two on the go at same time. A big pan fits on them nicely and is perfectly stable.
cheers for that, i was wondering how long each canister would last, i have 8 so that's 12 hours of cooking, excellent, far more than i expected though i'm sure i'll still be a bit frugal with it. i wish we an old fashioned kettle that i could put on one of those hobs, those are so much more efficient than boiling water in a pot... thought occured to me i could boil water for something like noodles then use the water that's left from boiling in our hotwater bottles in a pinch, might take some extra cleaning once the emergency was over but hot food AND a hot water bottle when the electric has been off for a long while would be too good to pass up!
thanks to everyone that has been posting links... i've geared up the emergency prep, again! this house is so warm now i'm wishing this would just come and get it over with so i can turn the heat down :rotfl:
i've been in my chest freezer and my fridge quite a bit today as i got my last shopping in til new years so i put the flash freeze switch on for a few hours on the freezer and have turned the fridge up just a bit more. tomorrow we'll fill up all our bottles with fresh water again, got a few more since last time, i'd prefer not to have to open my huge bottles if we don't have to (plus they are huge and heavy so not easy to use) bathtub is filled up again for the toilet and for washing dishes in the bathroom sink
i'm thinking it's not likely to get too bad here for a few more days but i also don't fully trust the mets timescales so better to be as ready as possible now. stay safe everyone!0 -
We have the yellow alert for tomorrow through rest of week, even mentioning possible sleet or snow. I have no plans for going out the door before next Tuesday, poor hubby has to go to work and we will need some more fresh milk by weekend, but if its really bad still then we have 6lts of UHT and dried milk.
I have got chicken soup with veg now in one slow cooker and brisket with veg in the other so if things get bad and we lose power they should both be cooked by the time they happen and can easily be heated up on the camping stove. Neither should be overcooked as veg is frozen and so is the brisket, so soup can be turned off in the morning but brisket I can leave on all day - done this before and we have been fine, I just make sure the meat is fully cooked before I take it out. Chicken of course has been defrosted would never cook that from frozen. Its just getting tired and would take hours for meat to defrost ( don't like defrosting anything in microwave), this way I can get it on and go to sleep handy without worrying about staying awake to put meat on.
Hope everyone is stocked up and prepared.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Hi all preppers, I have just made a mad dash to Mr T's for some more stores as mine were very low due to working long hours last week and dipping into winter stock pile, Grabbed a nice brisket and a mini red wine so that will bask in it's own juices for a good few hours tomorrow, as I won't be going anywhere, we have the most horrendous wind and rain here in St Ives Cornwall.....I'd rather the children NOT go to school tomorrow really if it continues like this, always so paranoid of debris flying about and the walk to school is very tree lined, so maybe will take them in the car.
I had to laugh today, DD2 9ys old was with my mum today as she had a temp the last few days, my mum took her to the local supermarket in the car as she was temperature free, while my mum was buying all her goodies and scooby snax, she said my daughters eyes lit up and she asked if they were going to be eating some of the goodies when the got back to the house today.... "yes of course we will" said mum, "why"???? So DD2 replies......."well mummy buys nice food and scooby snax, but we never get to have them because she keeps hiding them under her bed saying that they are for winter!!!!!! Hahahaha!!! Maybe Im taking the money saving to the extreme, thank god no one outside of the family heard that or they might think I neglect my kids!!! In my defence DD2 is very hyperactive, and I have to watch her diet, she had 2 jaffa cakes last night with her milk about 8pm and was awake until 1am.... Never again, I was soooo tired this morning at work!
Hoping everyone is staying safe, I almost took off trying to close the boot tonight after my trip to Mr T's.... well im only a little whipper snapper!!Thriftkitten

Just spotted these if anyone is without them.... Sadly here in Cornwall the only reason I will need these is to grip feet to the ground with the wind, but hey ho, anything is better than falling you yer butt eh!!http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/snow-grips-ice-grips-anti-slip-snow-shoes-2-99-inc-postage-ebay-sourcing4u-1088861Thriftkitten

been in for treatment for a few days but back now and had several pages to catch up on - glad to see my fellow scottish posters survived the storms last week - not looking too good for this week so far either:eek:And there is life without a twice daily shower - use a face cloth and have a quick cats lick on the bits that show
Dishes can be done with a kettleful of hot water. You can go walks - heats you up and improves your mood no end.
pooh hi honey - if its the mains that freezes there probably isnt a lot you can do - for professional advise why not ask the water board? I assume you have loads and loads of bottled water already bought??? I know its not warm but the Jack Murphy waterproof coats are long and you could layer underneath with woolly cosy clothes
mardatha - if its only for the freezer you might get away with a suitcase genny - depends on the watts you want to use - do an ebay search 'suitcase generator' and you will see them HTH
I need to get the rest of my food stores and especially loo rolls bought this week - apart from that I think I will manage although there will always be little things I havent done/got I expect.
stay warm but more importantly stay safe everyone

could do better - must try harder

If anyone is looking for bungee cords to fasten their wheelie bin lids down or together I spotted them in B&M today 3 for £1. Pity, I'm sure that I paid £2.39 for mine in Wilkinsons the other day...:(
B&M usually sell the packs of gas canisters cheap too, but they mightn't have them at the moment as the shelves are full of Christmas stock. Worth looking after Christmas though:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that the weather forecast has sort of fast forwarded? We weren't due high winds until Thursday but it's really rough here - for East Anglia that is"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0
