I only asked dh yesterday to fetch the camping stove and kettle for me, I asked him to put it away so it was handy. Flipping heck, talk about huffing and puffing and making a meal of it, as he spent half an hour looking for it and pulled stuff of shelves and he still hasn`t found it.

It is very small and so is the camp kettle with it and I have decided that I am not waiting any longer. It will always be handy for backpacking, if it ever turns up , so I have ordered a new one and some bigger gas bottles and a 2 litre camp kettle, all better anyway. The one I ordered is more stable and safer anyway

How come men are in power everywhere? It`s women who actually DO

I have my emergency cooking device sorted now. A roasting tin with tea lights under the flat rack, which is turned sideways on the top. It is absolutely perfect and I`ll put the whole lot on a thick wooden chopping board. I feel very comfortable with that, rather than relying on dh to get the ozpig sorted in a snow storm. I mean the wood is all tucked away in a store behind a medium sized greenhouse and it would all have to be moved. At least he knows where the firelighters are but he had to ask where the ozpig is and the barbeque fuel. Men!!!!

re candles in a room, We have a vent on the floor for the stove so that is good and candles are safe in this house. Ventilation is needed ie open vents in walls or over windows or even leaving a door ajar will be good

I have metal tops for the yankee jars, they stop draughts but actually get very hot so are good heaters

that's the same kind of camp stove i have now, only mines red. the old kind you had before is probably what scared me off camp stoves previously they are so fiddly and easy to knock over but this kind is very stable and can take a large pot if needed.

mine came with 8 cans of butane think it cost me £19 last year which i was pleased with.

this talk of roasting racks with tealights has given me an idea, i'll have to try it out and report back, my roaster is v shaped so might work a little different than other peoples but i have an idea hmmm

Shegar - so glad to hear you are feeling better - long may it continue.
Kittie- Thanks for the reminder about the camping set. Have just gone and found mine - still in box unopened. Contains stove, 2 pots, steamer and frying pan. Feeling more orgainsed day by day.
    Sorted with tealights as well.
    Keep those tips coming folks.

You dont need a roasting pan, you can sit the tealights on worktop or sink, then balance a cooling rack or grill pan on top of a bit of 2x1" wood - either in a square or triangle. Nine tealights work fine and will boil a full kettle in 20 mins. I've done it and it works fine.
  • better and better, thanks mardatha, women brainpower rules!!!

I`ve just come back in from making stuff safe prior to the big storms that met are predicting. All strawberry planters and troughs are now low down and sheltered by walls and I have asked dh to tie some wooden seats to a heavy umbrells stand. They are cedar and have got lighter over the year. Anything else now is in the lap of the gods

    Just found this for us-

Re other regions, go to the met office site Confuzzled
  • Hm, I'm not sure I'd trust a Sun weather report as far as I could throw it - they're just as sensationalist as the Daily Mail.

Met Office so far only have a yellow warning for snow in this area this week.
