Preparing for winter III

lizzyb1812 wrote: »pumpkinlife - thanks for the link to that article - as you said, quite technical but very interesting. It's long, so to summarise VERY succinctly, wearing long thermal underwear - top and bottom - can make you warm enough to be able to cut energy bills for heating significantly.
Whilst this is good news in itself, it occurred to me that encouraging people who are sedentary either by nature, because of illness/disability or because of old age, to wear long underwear could improve quality of life for many during the winter months.
There are caveats - ie if all the family wear full thermal underwear and turn down the heating what do you do with visitors? Hand out extra sets? :rotfl:
Thanks again for the link - good reading for anyone wanting to stay warm on a budget this winter.
My problem is that although me and hubby ( late 40's) do wear suitable clothing for the winter, my parents who live with us wont
They are off the school - they can afford to heat the house so they will
Even if it does cost £500 every 6 weeks
Its so hard trying to reach a reasonable compromise. Yes they get their heat allowance but they are on pensions and their savings have been hit very hard with the recession.Unfortunately because they live with us,they dont have any other expenditure other then the monthly share of the bills.
Personally I dont want to be spending every penny I have on heating, esp when I see the boiler on full pelt and the back door wide open
I think my parents being war generation can remember the struggles and now think that cutting back and making do is going backwards rather then how things should be ( as me and hubs feel)
Lot of conflict here at times....0 -

Completely agree with using garden shovels or spades. At my parents last year the snow on the roof would melt during the day and drip down onto the path running around the house and formed a two inch thick sheet of ice. Eventually we had to go out there as the freezer and tumble dryer are in the garage and I spent an hour smashing it with a spade to clear it. No way a plastic snow shovel would have done that!
I forgot to bid on a lakeland dehydrator on ebay and guess what? It sold for a measely £33
However, I do have a kilo of wool oddments on the way to me to knit and crochet a blanket :jLiving cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
Dark at 6.30 tonight - not happy because I just know that dark nights at 4.30pm are just around the corner
It's also raining here - well spitting at the moment, but I think we are in for a good amount fo rain. We need it because the ground is rock hard, bone dryCat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

I got a snow shovel today in town. I wasnt expecting to find one in a city centre. It was £5.99 which I thought was an ok price. It was a new Swedish store I got it from. I did get some strange looks coming back on the bus with it.0

I have thank you. I've also spent the entire afternoon doing an application form for a job back where I was made redundant from. It's a different contract and guaranteed for 5 years so am hoping like mad it comes off. My ex boss seems very keen to get me back and I've just emailed him the form to 'pretty up' before I send it in on Friday
In answer to your question I always used to advise people to ask the following at interviews when they get to the dreaded 'Have you got any questions bit'
1. When will I find out if I've been successful?
2. Is there a company pension scheme?
3. What progressions are available for me to work towards within the company?
4. Does the company have any plans for expansion/recruitment in the near future? (Just a nosy one really but it really impresses!)
Thanks for that. Hubby has an interview on Monday, so I told him those. He said another one he's heard that's good to use is:
How does your company measure success?
Good luck with your interviews. I hope you get that job at your old place of work.0 -

Wind kicked up by sunset here and has been blustering thoroughly since. I got back from Mr T's and nearly got eaten by the car door :O My first thought was to grab the bungee cord inside the front door to secure the wheelie bin lid - it was already blown open when I got to it! Put my fridge magnets over the keyholes, pulled the door curtain across and relaxed safe in the knowledge all is secure from the winds. All little tips from last year's prep thread making me a smug happy bunny.
Now just need to find some cupboard space for the 4kg of salt I picked up today...0
