Hi Rising - trouble is there is a close fitting gutter then porch roof down one side and its 20 feet long so I dont think I could manage that on my own and therein lies the problem - to do anything safely needs another body - preferably one with with a bit of strength and know-how. Otherwise it looks avery good alternative to a re-roof, Im sue the cats agreedebt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0

Very blowy overnight here too - temp is 12 degees but wind chill takes that down to 'very chilly'(technical metereological term!). Very woried about the tarpaulin I struggled to get over my shed/studio roof last month - already some of the roofing nails I used have ripped out and I dont know what I will do if it goes as no money to get it properly fixed and the neighbour who is a roofer never turned up to help and you dont like to ask again do you?
Have had dehumidifier on for over 24 hours now and humidity is just overing around 54% - I think this means the room is qiute damp - am I right humidity experts?
All I have done today is a bit of cleaning and shuffling stuff aound - daughter ome in 3 weeks for Xmas and I have been sleeping in her room since she left in Sept so thats going to mean a big switch around. I hate my bedroom so much I just havent been going into it except to grab clothes. It faces north, feels pepetually damp and has a blue carpet - I hate blue - it makes me feel SO depressed when used in home decor. Of course cant afford to eplace and have missed 2 on freecycle in the last fortnight - may be reduced to jus having boards in the end BUT will that be colder and draftier I ask myself? Sometime I really with I had a part-time OH to talk these things though with....
:rotfl: love it! I know what you mean too. I am happy being single atm and have no intention of having a FT OH but a part time one would be handy on occasionsLike for chopping wood

tugrin, don`t fret re your humidity. It is fine. We have an eco house that has been monitored by various big bodies and an important university and built to be comfortable at all times. Our humidity at the moment is 61 and it feels perfect. 55-62 is very good
I have been busy getting the freezer sorted as I have realised that it is the end of the preserving season. I cannot squash another thing into it, big mistake so another thing to be aware of when preserving all next year ie much much more brining and bottling and far less freezing. The bottles also survive power cuts better as the freezer cannot be opened if we get cuts this winter
I have been watching the hairy bikers `best of British. Fantastic and very worth watching, lots of food from the war years. I just got enthsiastic again and ordered 2 after the war cookery and kitchen books for a 1p each ie 1945-1954. Will make good reading in the winter.
I cannot find my chocolate stash, booger, I hid it too well
The wind woke me last night and I am in sw so it must have been a nightmare further north0 -
Hey everyone,
Blue Skies here today a bit blowy but nothing like up in Scotland.
We are finishing off some of our Winter prep, hubby is going to seal around the bay window & finishing the radiator foils.
We currently sleep in seperate rooms because of his snoring and we set a challenge today to clear out our rooms and then put anything we no longer want/need on ebay.
Ive used this opportunity to get rid of some clothes which are now too big and a coat (as i had 2) Ive finished clearing out under the bed and found a few books which i think i will stick on ebay but i dont know if they will sell at all.
Ive probably got an hour left of sorting to do then i will stick it all on and hopefully make a few pennies.
Oh and i dont know if you remember a while back Poppy my hamster got sick? well she was a tough litter fighter and sadly died last week and i was devestated but it was her time as she had been fighting it for so long. Hubby took me yesterday and i got a new hamster called Dougie (nothing to do with im a celeb/mcfly lol pure coincidence as i dont even watch that!) he is a little fluffy cutie and has been in his ball having a fun time while ive been sorting the room out. He's no poppy but i love him all the same, he is quite tame already but did try to nibble my finger this morning - i need to be more patient and let him settle into his new home. He isn't very keen on his cage though, it has ladders which he keeps sliding down in a comical way. So im watching a different cage on ebay at the moment a space ship type with tubes rather than ladders i think it might be more appealing that poppys old pink oneEverything is always better after a cup of tea0 -
Sorry about Poppy - she was a littlr figter you are right, not many litte creatures survive chest things. Sadly they dont live long so it's hard as they are in your life so briefly. Dougie sounds great and will have a totally different pesonality which you will grow to love too.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0

Yup, I will third that ......:) Tugrin hope you manage to get something sorted for the shed.
Just realised at the very left of the pic you can just about make out my "cat flap" hole through to the field at the back of the house - the cats love it and it's been fantastic for wee cat who has a dodgy knee and the climb / jump down over the 6' fence did her no good at all.
Must try to "pinch" a bit of the field next year - I can only manage to get an extra 6 feet or so due to a door opening into the field at the front but a bit extra would be fab and provide much needed space for some extra veg growing! (Neighbours further up have already "pinched" around 15' & association says it's OK as long as you reinstate the original fence line when you leave). I was going to do it earlier this year but as I was thinking about moving, I didn't - staying put now so ......
Wind still horrendous here!
Chirpy sorry to hear about Poppy, they just worm their way into our hearts don't they but glad to hear that you've found a new companion with Dougie.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Thriftkitten love to hear about your garden as I can compare with mine which is a lot colder I would think. I've also got roses sprouting, in fact I've actually got two which are flowering still! Bulbs are all pushing their way through too I hope that we don't lose them over the winter as I love that first sign of Spring...
Unfortunatly nothing to get excited about with my garden, I only have a 7ft by 7ft square garden with green chain link all the way round.... part of my newly built eco house, the garden gets no sunshine thanks to a selfish neighbour who has erected a 6ft fence, so even my little washing line dosent do much good as no sunshine.
I planted a daphne in one corner, a white climbing rose i t'other and a honey suckle by the side of the house, and am trying to train them to cover the fence and beutify it a little, I have numerous vintage mirrors dotted along the fence to try my darned est to capture any sunlight, but fail miserably:mad: I have only been here 2 yrs and im on my 2nd round of turf, it's just damp and soggy all the time so when I try to cut it it looks bald, all quite depressing really, I had thought of decking it and using some nice big terracotta potted plants next year, but seeing as it's a rented housing association house and not my own I didn't really want to sink the money into it.
RE the fence... I had a word with the neighbour and asked her to lower it a little as its only a bamboo fence, she came out with some old codswallop about how she would as her ex to do it.... which never happened, and it finally snapped last week(wire rotted) she came over full of the devil asking me if I had cut it down pahhhaaaa...I said no:A but was quite excited at the thought of some winter sunshine..... well on the promise of a perpetual leg over, the ex has now errected it again Grrrrrrr!!!!! So it's back to handbags at dawn on the school run, I can foresee another spring summer with a cold dark back garden/livingroom!!!! Some people have no conscience at all....... Rant over!!!Thriftkitten

Thriftkitten I wonder if they're allowed to do that, I'm sure there's some law about not robbing neighbours of natural light? might be worth a check with your council; I may be talking through my hat though
does anyone know anything about this?
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I think 6ft is usually considered to be a reasonable height for fencing - anything over 8ft you could probably challenge, but as well as right to light there is right to privacy to consider.0
-
Thriftkitten, contact your housing association re the fence.
The title deeds of the property may well state the maximum height allowed and I have always found HA built to the limit. They will know the limit and be able to enforce it if needed. If fences were allowed I'm surprised they didn't put one up. chain link leads me to think that they are not allowed, but a call to them will confirm the maximum height.
You have no claim to right to light in your garden due to a tree growing over the years for example, but would have if you had enjoyed your garden for say 20 years with a 3' tall fence then a neighbour puts up a 6' fence.
Anything over 6' on a boundary wall requires council approval.
On narrow gardens it is often stated in the title deeds that 3' is the maximum to allow privacy and light for all gardens. I have a long narrow garden built in the 1930's and my title deeds state that 3' is the maximum height for the property fences.

If you want grass you need to get lawn seed for shady lawns, and if you want to maximise the amount of light paint your side of the bamboo fence white, or as someone I know once did used white sheets tied to bamboo poles in the summer all around her garden, just bought them in to wash when dirty, created enough light to grow veg which is what she wanted. May work with cheap mylar sheets too.
EDIT: To keep this on topic, remove any leaves from your lawn as they will mulch down on top of your grass, stick a garden folk in to create air/drainage holes, and keep an eye out for cheep shady lawn seed to sow in spring0
